The Day Ricardo Falcon looks back at the Chicano Movement from the stand point of 1992 as it counter poses the idealism of youth and innocents, with the cynicism and pragmatism that engulfed Latinos during the post-Reagan period of our history. Ludlow:El Grito de las Minas repeats the theme of revisiting history to draw commentary on contemporary times. It chronicles one of the most celebrated moments in Colorado labor history, the massacre of miner’s wives and children on April 20th. In contrast from many of the literary and theatrical approaches to this event, which focused on the celebrated figures such as John D. Rockefeller, Mother Jones and John Reed and the like, the play offers the fictional story of a Mexican-American woman and her family. Sara Martinez becomes a center point that places Chicanos squarely in middle of this profound historical moment. Written in 1991 and staged in 1992 Ludlow: El Grito de las Minas inserts a brown feminist presence into a history often dominated by white males. Garcia also includes lesser works that have since gone on to have solid presentations by Su Teatro. Little Hands Hold the Wind written for San Antonio borne and nationally known actress Ruby Nelda Perez, who presented the work as a solo piece, there were also presentation in San Francisco and a run at Su Teatro. It is considered to be one of the most lyrical and poetic of Garcia’s work.
