Best introduction to Old English (Anglo-Saxon) out there, period.
By Cynesige
About two years ago I decided to teach myself Old English. It has been quite a difficult journey, because while there are some shared words and similarities between old and new (modern) English, the truth is that Old English is, to us, a foreign language. The grammar is way, way different than modern English, and once you get done learning the few hundred words that are similar or identical (gold, God, etc.) and congratulating yourself for being able to say "Hello! My name is Bob and I am hungry and I live in England" in Old English, you end up here: "willath hy hine athecgan gif he on preat cymeth." And at that point you realize that the complex Old English training/learning materials out there are far too overwhelming for the average adult learner to deal with.

This book is the antidote. It is VERY easy to understand and digest in manageable chunks, and literally from Page 1 you get a sense that you're making progress and learning how to read Old English sentences. The language study is combined with useful cultural tidbits, and the book covers things that, in retrospect, seem blindingly obvious but that other books fail to cover -- such as the fact that the written letters of Old English don't all look like our letters; no matter how hard and how much you memorize verb tables, you will not be able to read the simplest "real" Old English text until you learn to recognize how they wrote their s, r, and g's. And especially the w's, which were called wynns and looked like thin, squashed p's. I learned that on about page 10 of this book, and it quickly informed me as to why, after managing to get the basic gist of the language in my head, I had still been unable to read a SINGLE word in an actual handwritten Old English document. Well, now I can. It isn't that difficult.

The book will not fully prepare you for reading Old English texts; it is more like a primer that will get you launched in the right direction. To read the Seafarer or Beowulf in original Old English, you'll need to take it further than this book. There are plenty of other books that can help you do that, once you've got the basics down.

Although superficially aimed at children, in point of fact it is a brilliant exercise in adult learning. I would go as far as to say that this book is the most ingenious piece of adult learning material I have ever encountered on any topic. It is simply flawless at getting a newbie engaged with its topic.

Very sadly, I heard that the author Matt Love has passed away, so I guess we will not be seeing the additional volumes which were planned for this series. My understanding is that many more volumes were planned, and one can only imagine how they would have propelled the adult learner to mastery of this difficult subject matter. A true loss.

Fun Conversational Old English
By Karen M. Carlson
This is a lovely beginners' book for learning Old English. It definitely takes the "conversational" approach to presenting the language; we read and hear Leofwin -- an Englishman in the 900s -- and his family and neighbors talking about daily life. The book is heavily illustrated with colour cartoon-style drawings of the characters and many objects -- household items, animals, natural features, and so on. It also includes some modern English mini-essays on facets of life in the 10th century.

The author assumes neither prior experience with learning other languages nor familiarity with grammatical terminology. This beginning volume (more to come, the author promises!) is very light on grammar, and introduces it gradually and in small doses. This makes it suitable for young readers, re-enactors who want to be able to converse in the language, and anyone who is looking for a gentle introduction to the English of the Anglo-Saxon period.

This first book in the series will not give you everything you need in order to read Beowulf or the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle in the original. It would work well with a more complete teach-yourself book such as Stephen Pollington's "First Steps in Old English." Where I am finding it excels is for learning vocabulary (which has been my biggest weakness in learning languages). The multi-media approach facilitates this -- reading the words, seeing them associated with the pictures, and hearing them in the sound files (which can be downloaded from the publisher's website) reinforce vocabulary. The sound files are manageable segments of typically around 1 minute duration. I have them on my iPod and review to them while I'm going for a walk.

The engaging characters and daily situations make this work more accessible and more entertaining than the sort of historical accounts and sermons found in Old English readers. If you've any inclination toward learning a bit of the ancestor of our modern tongue, I recommend you get aquainted with Leofwin, his stupid and lazy slave, his sometimes hard-to-live-with mother, and the rest of his kith and kin.

I can't wait for the rest in the series.
By B. Weaves
I second everything the first reviewer said.

This is a lovely, easy, do it yourself way to learn Old English.

I have Stephen Pollington's books, but it's still a bit hard to learn it yourself.

This new book is a great introduction to actually learning to speak Old English.

The best part is that the book has a website with short sound bites of all the Old English in the book.
Each sound bite is probably a minute or less long.
It's good to hear the Old English spoken.

The bit that really got me was that the wife in the book has a loom, and it's the RIGHT kind of loom. A warp weighted loom. It's that sort of attention to detail that makes me feel that everything else is time period appropriate, too.
