Glare is the name given to a new material for aircraft structures developed at Delft University in the Netherlands. It consists of thin aluminium layers bonded together by adhesive containing embedded fibres and is very resistant to fatigue. It took more than two decades from the first tests in Delft to the major breakthrough following the decision of Airbus to apply the material on the A380 super-jumbo. This book tells the story of the ups and downs and the final success of their efforts.

Interesting read

The history of the development and application of Glare is fascinating and instructive to anyone interested in materials. With the constant struggle to develop stronger lighter more fatigue resistant materials, at reasonable cost both in terms of initial manufacture and subsequent repair, Glare offers great potential. Carbon fiber composites may offer better theoretical benefits, but the difficulty of their fabrication, their highly anisotropic nature, difficulty of repair and fault intolerance make them tough to deploy economically. Glare offers a highly fault-tolerant alternative with better economics and deserves wider consideration by the engineering community.
I was particularly interested to learn of Fokker's early production experience with laminated aluminum, it's economics and fatigue resistance. With the current trend for CNC machining, given the ease by which a CAD file can be sent to a fab house, it's easy to overlook the fundamentals of fatigue and the ease by which it can be mitigated with a lower cost alternate methodology such as lamination. Glare builds on Fokker's experience and this book illustrates how.
