Animals and Disease: An Introduction to the History of Comparative Medicine, by Lise Wilkinson

Animals and Disease examines the interactions of medicine and veterinary medicine in their common quest for ways of combating and controlling epidemic diseases in man and animals. Emphasis is placed on the study of animal disease itself, and its implications for human medicine, at first empirically, and later by deliberate use of animal models. Following a general introduction, the text is mainly concerned with developments of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, focusing in particular on the apparent paradox of the founding of the Brown Institution in London, an institute for comparative medicine, nearly twenty years before similar institutes appeared in France and in Germany, although comparative medicine was studied with much more enthusiasm there than in the British Isles. The rise and fall of the Brown Institute and the subsequent rise of the great institutes of Paris and Berlin is discussed, concluding with the rise at the turn of the century of American institutes for comparative medicine.

Review
"Regardless of the discipline of an academic veterinarian, I believe this book to be a must in one's reading list as a help in understanding the role of veterinary medicine in its service to mankind." R.B. Talbot, Journal of Veterinary Medical Education

"The mastery of primary and secondary sources, wit, and style make this book enjoyable reading." T.P. Gariepy, Choice

"...an interesting book that will have special appeal to veterinarians, edidemiologists, and teachers of preventive medicine and public health....should be read by all those who are interested in epidemiology." James H. Steele, New England Journal of Medicine

"... an important edition to the literature of veterinary medicine and is not just for history buffs. For those who wish to pursue individual topics further, there are 37 pages of references and annotation." J. Fred Smithcors, Agri-Practice

"...traces the history of veterinary medicine from antiquity through virological research in animal pathology conducted at the Rockefeller Institute for Medical Research in the twentieth century...a valuable contribution. It is also topical in the brave new world of baboon liver transplants and speculation about the primate origins of AIDS." Susan E. Lederer, ISIS

From the Back Cover
Man's attempts to learn about aspects of the human body and its functions by observation and study of animals are to be found throughout history, especially at times and in cultures where the human body was considered sacrosanct, even after death. This book describes the origins and later development, especially in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, of comparative medicine and its interrelationship with medicine and veterinary medicine and the efforts of its practitioners to understand and control outbreaks of infectious, epidemic diseases in humans and in domestic animals. In the nineteenth century their efforts and increasing professionalism led to the creation of specialised institutes devoted to the study of comparative medicine. Paradoxically the first such institute, the Brown Institution, opened in London in 1871, despite the fact that the study of this branch of medicine in Britain had always lagged behind that in France and Germany. The book discusses the rise and fall of this centre and describes how it was soon overtaken in importance by the great institutes in Paris and Berlin and then, from the turn of the century, by American institutes, funded by private fortunes. This book sheds much new light on the medical and veterinary history of this period and will provide a new perspective on the history of bacteriology.

About the Author

Ian Fleming (1908-1964), creator of the world's best-known secret agent, is the author of fourteen James Bond books. Born in London in 1908 and educated at Eton and Sandhurst, he became the Reuters Moscow correspondent in 1929. In the spring of 1939, Fleming went back to Moscow as a special correspondent for the London Times. In June of that same year, he joined Naval Intelligence and served throughout World War II, finally earning the rank of Commander, RNVSR (Sp.). Much of the James Bond material was drawn directly from Fleming's experiences as an intelligence officer. Later, Fleming became a consultant on foreign affairs for the London Sunday Times, by which time he had become far better known as the creator of James Bond.

007's Comfort and Discomfort in 9 Short Stories
By H. S. Wedekind
"Quantum of Solace - the amount of comfort. Yes, I suppose you could say that all love and friendship is based in the end on that. Human beings are very insecure. When the other person not only makes you feel insecure but actually seems to want to destroy you, it's obviously the end. The Quantum of Solace stands at zero. You've got to get away to save yourself."

- James Bond (QUANTUM OF SOLACE)

This paperback, recently released before the debut on November 21, 2008 of the latest 007 movie of the same name, "Quantum of Solace," is actually a compilation of nine short stories written by Ian Fleming in two separate books (FOR YOUR EYES ONLY and OCTOPUSSY/THE LIVING DAYLIGHTS). According to Fleming's biographer John Pearson in his book THE LIFE OF IAN FLEMING, six or so of these short stories began as outlines for half-hour TV episodes written for CBS in the late '50s. The TV series never got off the ground but the short stories have survived. Several of them were made into full-length movies having absolutely nothing to do with the original stories (e.g. "Octopussy," "From a View to a Kill," and "For Your Eyes Only"). I can't imagine the next Bond movie, starring Daniel Craig as a much better 007 than any of the previous ones in my opinion, (Sean Connery excepted) has anything to do with the short story "Quantum of Solace," since it is only about a conversation between JB and the Governor of The Bahamas (the governor's name is never given) in Nassau after a dinner party. There's no action. No intrigue. No skullduggery. It's simply a story about a failed marriage. Suffice it to say, the short stories are well-worth reading on their own. Bond is his usual suave and deadly self and a staunch defender of Queen and Country against the West's old Cold War nemesis...the Soviet Union. Highly recommended.

The contents of this book
By R. MCCOSKER
This is a collection of all of the nine short stories about James Bond which were written by the late Ian Fleming.

(Fleming, of course, created the character of James Bond and was the author of the books which became the basis for all the James Bond movies. In addition to the short stories, Fleming wrote twelve novels about Bond.)

Over the years, these short stories have been kept in print in two collections: _For Your Eyes Only_, with five stories; and _Octopussy and The Living Daylights_, with four.

Now, for the first time ever, every one of the nine stories have been collected in a single volume, _Quantum of Solace_, which makes owning all these stories more convenient and economical.

That's the good news.

The not-so-good news is that the publisher here exercised no imagination, merely sandwiching together the contents of the two books.

Looking for a well-written foreword or afterword about these stories or their author? No such luck: The publisher includes no foreword or afterword at all.

The stories as earlier collected were not arranged according to the sequence of James Bond's life -- or to any other discernible plan. This new omnibus collection does absolutely nothing to fix that -- it just puts one unchanged collection behind another unchanged collection. This is disappointing, because we know from books by researchers like John Griswold (_Ian Fleming's James Bond: Annotations and Chronologies_) that there are sound ways to sequence the stories (and novels) by events in the life of James Bond.

Here are the contents of _Quantum of Solace_, as arranged in the book:

(Repeating the contents in sequence from _For Your Eyes Only_ ...)

"From a View to a Kill"
"For Your Eyes Only"
"Quantum of Solace"
"Risico"
"The Hildebrand Rarity"

(... and then repeating the contents of _Octopussy and The Living Daylights_)

"Octopussy"
"The Property of a Lady"
"The Living Daylights"
"007 in New York"

BOND IN SHORT
By Michael C. Smith
This collection of Ian Fleming short stories is a must have for any Bond fan. I have been discovering Fleming since the release of the film "Casino Royale" and have found his books to be not only thrilling but also very well written. His prose is as lean, hard and ruthless as James Bond himself. He is a joy to read.

Here in "Quantum of Solace" I was not disappointed. All the stories are wonderful and it is amazing to see how Fleming can pack so much drama and excitement into a few pages just as he does in his full-length novels.

Among the best short stories, at least my favorites are;

"Risico" has a wonderful Roman setting and a surprise villain, just so much fun.

"Quantum of Solace" is an incredible tale of the death of love told over cocktails.

"View To A Kill", Catapults the reader into a trill ride which is very cinematic and a great story.

"Property of a Lady" shows the cool everyday aspect of what being a Secret Service agent is about.

"The Living Daylights". Here the cold winter cityscape of cold war Berlin is wonderfully described and a little romance too.

And of special note you can find a scrumptious recipe for scrambled eggs in "007 In New York" (The character of Solange in the film of Casino Royale seems to have come from this story)

All the stories are wonderful, and this is a must have for any Bond fan. It is fascinating to pick out scenes from the stories that have ended up being incorporated into various films in the franchise, some intact with their stories titles and some buried into a plot for a film not related to the title. Such is the case with "Risico". You will have fun just as I did in the "Ah ha" moment of realization on this point.

So Bond is back in the movies now in a bigger way than ever before thanks to the reinvention of the franchise and to Daniel Craig who is by far the nearest to Bond as he appears in the books. And here in "Quantum of Solace" you have the opportunity to enter into his world by way of mere vignettes where you will find no solace for James Bond but a lot of adventure fun, and fine writing.

Disappointment
By Suzanne Kreuziger
I was very disappointed in this "study guide" (especially since the textbook which it accompanies is great). Certainly there are NCLEX-style questions and the answers are in the back. However, with no rationales to accompany the answers, its utility is dubious. I stress to my students that when they are studying they need to examine the rationales for WHY an answer is correct or incorrect (this helps me, as the instructor, as well). The other issue I have with this text is that the content is narrow. For example, in the kidney chapter, there are pages of questions about polycystic kidney disease at the expense of other kidney pathology and nursing care. Broader content needs to be covered.

Useful
By Thomas Shelton
Not so much a study guide, as it is a test bank. It is full of test questions, but doesn't offer any explanations. Just the correct answers. Still useful when combinded with the clinical companion and textbook.

Strictly questions no rationales but does have answer key in the back of the book

Review

'Paying homage to the ancestors (Jean Toomer, Zora Neale Hurston, Professor Longhair), sitting at the feat of the elders (George Clinton, Sly Stone, James Brown) and welcoming a brand new generation of griots headed by funkmaster Aaron McGruder, The Funk Era and Beyond fills the largest remaining gap in the conversation on African-American music. Bolden's collection is theoretically sophisticated, endlessly provocative and, best of all, a joy to read.' Craig Werner, Professor and Chair, Department of Afro-American Studies, University of Wisconsin-Madison and the author of A Change Is Gonna Come: Music, Race& the Soul of America

'This engaging book takes the reader on a journey across the multi-layered and multidisciplinary terrain of funk. This series of essays on music and the visual and literary arts reveal how 'da funk' represents innovation and aesthetic principles rooted in the Black vernacular, which defines the uniqueness of Black creativity. The Funk Era and Beyond is a must-read to understand funk as a philosophy, an attitude, a way of life, and more broadly, a cultural phenomena.' - Portia K. Maultsby, Indiana University and editor of African American Music: An Introduction

not all funk
By MairaP
The interpretation of what constitutes 'funk' is quite loose. Some of the essays do not belong in this volume. The collection is thus somewhat disappointing.

Refuge Recovery: A Buddhist Path to Recovering from Addiction, by Noah Levine

Bestselling author and renowned Buddhist teacher Noah Levine adapts the Buddha's Four Noble Truths and Eight Fold Path into a proven and systematic approach to recovery from alcohol and drug addiction—an indispensable alternative to the 12-step program.

While many desperately need the help of the 12-step recovery program, the traditional AA model's focus on an external higher power can alienate people who don't connect with its religious tenets. Refuge Recovery is a systematic method based on Buddhist principles, which integrates scientific, non-theistic, and psychological insight.

Viewing addiction as cravings in the mind and body, Levine shows how a path of meditative awareness can alleviate those desires and ease suffering. Refuge Recovery includes daily meditation practices, written investigations that explore the causes and conditions of our addictions, and advice and inspiration for finding or creating a community to help you heal and awaken.

Practical yet compassionate, Levine's successful Refuge Recovery system is designed for anyone interested in a non-theistic approach to recovery and requires no previous experience or knowledge of Buddhism or meditation.

The Buddhist Big Book
By Brad F. Koch
In one word: Brilliant.
I work as a therapist in a treatment center. We treat 400-500 alcoholics and addicts each year. Many people resist the Judeo-Christian themes in 12 step work. For those people, there are few viable alternative recovery roads. Noah has illuminated for all suffering addicts the Buddhist path as a road to sustained recovery from addictions. He does an excellent job highlighting the truth of addiction, solid and deep inventory to explore, the necessity of abstinence in order to recover, the actions and practices (the path) one can take to contented long term sobriety, and the joy of fellowship and mentorship to sustain us as we travel the recovery and dharma road. Refuge Recovery can serve the purpose of helping newcomers get on the road to recovery, as well as benefit those who have been in recovery for some time but who may have gotten a bad case of so-dryety over the years, and now can re-discover contented sobriety through this powerful pathway.

Refuge Recovery seems well suited to those who want to do 12 step programs AND Buddhist recovery/Refuge Recovery - as well as those seeking a different path to recovery than currently dominate the recovery world. There are many wonderful books that create a bridge between meditation, Buddhism and the 12 steps. What has lacked to date is the equivalent of a `Big Book' for recovering people open to Buddhist philosophy and teachings. This book is a great 'Big Book' for the 21st century - keeping the best of what is offered in 12 step philosophy - while removing antiquated aspects and language. Refuge Recovery is a complete recovery program, which if followed, can and has brought about complete recovery from addictions of all kinds. This path laid out in this book provides a way of living that will be compatible for those seeking a non-theistic way of walking the spiritual road of recovery. As an addiction treatment professional, I have extreme gratitude for Noah's efforts, as well as for those who share their stories in the back of this wonderful book. I hope the treatment community embraces this powerful movement. May Refuge Recovery grow and flourish, for the benefit of all beings.

This is what's been missing for so long!
By MickeyMouth
This is definitely a book that has been sorely needed for a long time. Refuge Recovery, unlike so many other alternatives to 12-Step recovery, hasn't thrown the baby out with the bathwater. Everything that works in 12-Step recovery appears to be present in Refuge Recovery including thorough introspection (called inventories), personal responsibility and action-taking, interdependence with a supportive community, and a course of action on a spiritual path. But RR offers a non-theistic practice of spiritual principles as rich for the freethinker as for those who have a God as part of their belief system. There are other books about recovery and the 8-fold path, but this one has a whole community behind it. Great resource.

Read it, do it and recover
By Rick Wadsworth
As an individual in long term recovery and what that means for me is that I have not used a drink or drug recreationally since March of 1986, I recommend this book. My recovery began in 12step programs and I am grateful for their existence. As my understanding/sobriety increased, I was drawn to "Buddhism" particularly Zen. Noah has generously articulated much of what my experience has been in recovery and while as one reviewer pointed out empirical evidence is lacking, what he has written resonates. The language and process in his book is practical and easy to follow, without some of the magical thinking found in some programs. I plan to host a meeting.

Ego: The Game of Life, by Frank Schirrmacher

Twenty-five years after the end of the Cold War, a new Cold War is being waged in our societies. During the Cold War a theoretical model of man was developed by economists and the military, an egotistical being interested only in his own benefit and in duping his opponents to achieve his ends: a modern homo oeconomicus. After his career in the Cold War ended, he was not scrapped but adapted to the needs of the twenty-first century. He became the ringmaster of a new era of information capitalism. He sought to read, control and influence thoughts; to predict, price and eliminate risks. Today stock-market trading is guided by him. He uses computer algorithms and Big Data to build up detailed pictures of our preferences and then suggest and sell goods to us. The model has become a self-fulfilling prophecy. We are no longer the masters of our own fate. The Game of Life runs without us.

Schirrmacher traces the progress of this extreme rationalization of social life from the Cold War games of the 1950s Rand Corporation to the stock-market trading techniques that brought about the financial crash of 2008, showing how these developments were interwoven with the rise of game theory, rational choice theory and neoliberal economics. The state and politics increasingly submitted themselves to the logic of computerized game theory and an economistic view of the world, evading real decision-making in the process. In this brave new world individuals, alone in front of their computers, may think they are constructing a reality of their own choosing, but in fact they are being manipulated all along by others who are setting the rules of the game.

This international bestseller by one of Germany?s most distinguished journalists is a powerful indictment of a way of thinking that has become pervasive and threatens to undermine not only parliaments and constitutions but also the sovereignty of the individual to be the person he or she wants to be.

Review

"Frank Schirrmacher convincingly shows connections among such ostensibly disparate issues as the language of the Cold War and that of the trading floor, as he demonstrates how algorithms and statistical models have become the overwhelmingly dominant means we use to understand the brain, the market, the state and nature. In the end the human person becomes defined as a problem, because unable to be reduced to calculation in this way. This critique of contemporary egoism from the editor of Germany?s leading liberal conservative newspaper makes chilling but highly thought-provoking reading."
Colin Crouch, University of Warwick

"This book reads like a sociological thriller."
Ulrich Beck, Die Welt

"A piece of cultural criticism in the very best sense: a diagnosis, prognosis and cure all in one for our technologically induced egoism."
Der Tagesspiegel

"This book is an urgently needed appeal for us to rethink what we understand by economic rationality."
Handelsblatt

"In this new book, Frank Schirrmacher once again shows an extraordinary understanding of the volatility of our times, bringing into focus the widespread discontent felt in many sections of society."
Tages-Anzeiger

About the Author

It's a John Nash world out there
By David Wineberg
Ego: The Game of Life in inflammatory. Extraordinarily so. On nearly every other page there is an inflammatory statement to challenge the reader. It is relentless and effective. Right in the preface, Schirrmacher says in the game of life, you have to accept the idea that “the universe has singled you out to be its personal enemy.” It is not possible for me to put down a book that begins this way. And it does not disappoint.

At its core is Schirrmacher’s premise that rational choice theory and game theory are now running society. And that they were developed by a certified paranoid schizophrenic – John Nash. Nash could not countenance people acting selflessly. Fraternity and solidarity made no sense to Nash, who dismissed them as factors. It was all about self interest, and nothing else mattered. Nash is aided and abetted by economists who invented homo economicus, the evil twin of every human, who only acts selfishly to maximize returns. Plugged into faulty, incomplete models, the results have been unparalleled disasters, producing “impossible” failures and repeated once in a million year setbacks.

We are now players in John Nash’s game, the game of life. Google, Yahoo, Amazon and Facebook all build assumptions about us. They take us in new directions whether we want to go or not. Google Adwords uses an algorithm reputed to be the most advanced in the world, more sophisticated than any military app, which also models everyone and every action on Nash’s paranoia. Every internet search is an ad auction that adds to the knowledgebase. They are same as the algorithms used by hedge funds and real time traders, pumping millions of trades around the clock. Finance and the internet are merging to dominate everything.

This reductive analysis is as good as any out there, and better than most. But the primary impact from the book is in the challenging statements that pop up continually. Some are Schirrmacher’s and some are from other people, but they all have the same disturbing quality:

-The Cold War simply moved to Wall Street.
-After the end of the Cold War, a new cold war is opening up in the heart of societies.
-Economists invented homo economicus and convinced the world that it was natural law.
-Wall Street has reinvented the alchemist, turning worthless paper into real money at will.
-Derivatives went from zero in the 1970s to $1.2 quadrillion: 20 times more than the GNP of the world.
-In the 50s, stocks were held an average of four years. In 2010 it was two months. In 2014 it was 22 seconds.
-The most imperialistic economic theory was obviously Marxism.
-Everywhere today it is a binary question of exclusion or inclusion. You are with us or against us, you are worthy or not, you are in or you’re out.
-Individuals are being fashioned by the machinery of an unrestrained information market.
-What if the system didn’t reflect our “preferences”, but actively shaped them?

He lays the blame for the financial crisis squarely on the shoulders of John Nash and those who leverage him. The perverse result is the twisted, unequal society we have today. Schirrmacher died in 2014 at the age of 54. It’s unfortunate he is not around to collect the reactions to The Game of Life, and tell us how right he was.

The author hates self as he has no self-respect to do even basic research?
By I'm no expert, yet...
It would be nice if author had enough ego/self-respect to do basic research.

A lot of readers may react this way:

His conception of what rationality and self-interest mean in economics, psychology, and Aristotelian philosophy is equivalent to someone making assumptions about the meaning instead of actually understanding how the term is used in those subjects.

The dead giveaway is e.g. his ridiculous misrepresentations of game theory or the work of Ayn Rand.

Note to author: Reading the actual works or using GOOGLE is a good thing. What is going on in Germany that this is even considered a respectable work by reviewers?
