Motorcycle Handling Theory Revealed

I am an engineer first, and motorcycle racer (a distant) second. I like knowing what's going on under me when I'm dragging my knee at 140 mph, and in any field, I like understanding why some designs work and why others do not.
Mr. Foale's book is a hugely practical treatise on the subject of motorcycle chassis design-- and the only worthwhile one I know of other than some very technical SAE papers from the 1970's on modeling and simulation of motorcycle handling.
Mr. Foale's insight into the incredibly complex dynamics of motorcycle handling chassis design, and tire (sorry, Tony-- I just can't bring myself to spell it "tyre")/chassis/rider interaction comes from decades of building and riding specialty and adjustable-geometry frames to test out theories, and in more recent times, instrumenting motorcycles to validate and refine dynamic models. He's NOT guessing (and while this is not unique in motorcycling, it is rare to say the least!), and his dedicated pursuit of the truth is both admirable and hugely valuable.
This book is technical, but it also presents the material in such a way that, if you're curious enough to have asked yourself why your motorcycle behaves as it does, you will probably be able to understand and appreciate the book's presentation.
This book won't tell you how to fabricate a motorcycle frame and suspension, but it will tell you why some geometries work and why others do not in a given situation, and give you practical, applicable design guidelines and theory. It is not a prescriptive description of how to tune forks and shocks, but it addresses how the suspension geometry, settings and function impact the bike's behavior and helps you think through how to sort out handling issues for street or track. It does not address design for strength, materials selection or provide much on chassis flex (and in the modern motorcycling era, chassis flex is a vitally important design attribute/choice), but it gives you a great perspective on the history of frame and suspension concepts, with very interesting insights on why some really superior approaches have not been deemed economically viable by the major motorcycle brands.
If you don't have an ounce of geek in you and aren't related to Tony, then you'll rate this book 2 stars or worse. But if you want to understand motorcycle chassis design and handling, this book will reward concentrated study. If you've read and loved Kevin Cameron's technical articles, or have a copy of Gordon Jenning's Two Stroke Tuner's Handbook, dog-eared, grimy and revered from decades of application, you should own this book.

Over these decades, her august audience comprised kings and queens, presidents and prime ministers, the high and mighty. Truly a roving cultural ambassador of India, taking its traditional heritage and goodwill to distant lands, she performed at Sarah Bernhard Theatre in Paris for UNESCO, Scala Theatre in London, and Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow in the late 1950s. And she had the unique honour as the first Indian dancer to give a Bharatanatyam recital at the General Assembly of United Nations, to commemorate the 21st Anniversary of the Declaration of Human Rights, in 1969, receiving a standing ovation of the think-tanks of over 120 nations. Yet again, she was the first Indian artiste to dance at the International Opera House at Sydney, besides recitals at the Adelaide Festival, Royal Opera Ballet Festival, Stockholm, Holland Festival at Rotterdam, Middle East and Far East.

The acclaim for her performances stemmed from the most rigorous training she’s had under distinguished gurus of the purest classical styles. Her flawless technique and remarkably individual interpretation created a benchmark. With such emotional concentration and spiritual dedication, no way did she compromise in her diligent pursuit of traditional art form, even when there was a sudden shift in her life – from the concert stage to the screen. As the celluloid world drew her into its fold, she shot into fame with her very first film in Tamil, Vazkhai. Within a decade, she emerged as the reigning super star in the mainstream cinema, playing covetous leading roles in Nagin, Madhumati, Devdas, Sadhana, Gunga Jumna and Amrapali. She was commended as a ‘stunning perfectionist’ in realistic portrayals. And her rendition in Sangam, indeed, was the confluence of her creative talent that propelled her to heights of dizzy renown.

She became the ‘southern sensation’ with ‘twinkle toes’, for never had an actress from South made it as a national star, more so, for her considerable legacy to Indian Cinema as an accomplished dancer. It was rare for an actress to be a supple dancer with classical training. An amazing feat, working on two parallel tracks, as critics and connoisseurs applauded her research work to revive the ancient and forgotten temple dance forms, like Nava Sandhi. Never once did her Bharatanatyam swerve from the most scrupulous purity of Tanjore style.

Dancing, acting, golfing, marriage, motherhood…and then came another shift – entering the portals of Parliament – becoming a veritable crusader to champion the cause of the underprivileged. Bonding… to a life that continued to pose challenges to keep performing at every given stage, weathering many a storm, she personifies grace and beauty that is timeless. Precisely the stuff legends are made of…!

Classic book!

Wow. This is a treasure for any Bharatanatyam lover. Vyjayantimala Bali is one of the best bharatanatyam dancers in mid-late 1900s and even now. This book's beauty is the rare photographs of VB frm pre arangetram through her arangetrams to film career and post career where she focuses exclusively on dance. The photos are gen and there are several (probably close to 100). The autobiograpical nature is very gripping and pleasure to read. Se ends with a highly philosophical chapter and concludes by saying tongue should sing and limbs should dance.

Overall a fantastic collectible.

Good introduction to the OSI model

This little book gives s fine overview of the theoretical concepts underlying the OSI model. The problem I had with the book is that it did not dicuss the actual physical devices that are associated with each level of the model (NIC at level 1, hub, level 1, router level 3, etc). When you are trying to learn the OSI model, you cannot really escape from the hardware that takes the theory and makes it work in the real world. Otherwise, super!

About the Author

Good data but needs more specific examples

I was elected to my local board of education and we recently received a credible complaint from a parent that harassment of her son was being overlooked by school administrators. Accordingly, I felt obliged to read up on the issue of bullying. This book sets forth both the problem and the recommended solutions. Prof. Olweus is Norwegian and his studies primarily involve Scandinavian schools. Accordingly, questions came to my mind such as "Is Norway a more homogenious society than the United States? If so, are there any differences in both the problem and the solutions in a more ethnically heterogeneous society?" I don't know the answers but, the reader should keep these issues in mind when reading this book.
Prof. Olweus describes the problem and he sets forth well organized solutions to the problem which require involvement of teachers, administrators and parents, and further require communication with all students, even those who are neither bullies nor victims. The one problem I have with the book is that there are very few case histories and specific examples given. The book proposes solutions but does not provide a case history in which the specific solution was successfully applied to the problem at hand. Reliable data and sound recommendations are important but a few specific examples of how these recommendations worked would be helpful. For example, Olweus recommends that parents of a bully apply sanctions if the bullying behavior does not improve. He states, "The consequence should be associated with some degree of discomfort or unpleasantness, but corporal punishment must not be used." OK, fine; but what are specific examples of "discomfor or unpleasantness?" Where are the case histories giving examples? Without these, the book does not provide as fulfilling reading as it otherwise might. This book is well worth reading and I recommend it with the reservations expressed above.

Informative and helpful

I used this book as part of my master's thesis on analyzing bullying policies in schools. I based my study design around Dr. Olweus' definition of bullying since he a leading expert in the field. This book is a great read for anyone interested in learning more about bullying and what to do about it. Whether your kid is being bullied or is a bully him or herself, it's worth a read. Olweus' research has been conducted primarily in Europe, though they still remain relevant when discussing bullying in the US. It's just important to work with your kid's school to try and implement some of the techniques he suggests.

Dr. Olweus's work has become the standard approach to bullying prevention, reflected in such programs as the University of Colorado "Blueprints for Violence Prevention" project ... As a counselor and trainer specializing in bullying prevention, I find this book indispensable, and recommend it highly.
