He retells the stories of some of the most popular and versatile ventriloquists and polyphonists of the nineteenth century, and investigates the survival of ventriloquial delusions and desires in spiritualism and the 'vocalic uncanny' of technologies like the telephone, radio, film, and the internet.
Brimming with anecdote and insight, Dumbstruck is a provocative archeology of a seemingly trivial yet profoundly relevant presence in human history. Its pages overflow with virtuoso philosophical and psychological reflections on the problems and astonishments, the raptures and absurdities of the unhoused voice.

About the Author

Stephen Connor was educated at Christ's Hospital Horsham and Wadham College, Oxford, and has taught at Birkbeck College, University of London since 1979. He currently is Professor of Modern Literature and Theory. He is the author of numerous books on English literature and cultural studies, including Charles Dickens, Postmodernist Culture: An Introduction to Theories of the Contemporary, and Theory and Cultural Value.

The Art Of An Otherwise Silent Voice

Fearful attitudes toward ventriloquism may be fascinating as well as frightening. Ventriloquism as metaphor for certain cultural absurdities, demonstrates both comedic and frightening aspects that have been attributed to the unhoused voice. Dumbstruck is a masterful distillation of such organised phenomenon. In modern entertainment, a speech act, while over the course of history, ventriloquism, speaks from a complex logic of its own. It expresses its own form of logic to the world around it. Dumbstruck, has a treasured place on my library shelf. I found it well written. It tells the tale of voices that might have otherwise remained silent.

cultural ventriloquism suddenly verrrry interesting

I enjoyed this text, recommended by a colleague, for other reasons, but thought of it immediately when the possibility of George W. Bush's use of a wire and "ear" during the first debate with John Kerry began to surface on the internet in the last day or so. Talk about the "vocalic uncanny"! Is "wiregate" merely(!) a part of the trend of increasing technological possibilities for problematizing the relation between voice and body?

Steven Connor should write the next chapter. Meanwhile, read his deft connections and analysis of diverse phenomena associated with "cultural ventriloquism" and think about the (allleged) voice in our president's ear, and what that does to the (alleged) significance of his speech as he (allegedly) addresses the citizenry.

Is ventriloquism more acceptable if we are in on the trick?

Are we in on this (alleged) trick, anyway? I mean, we all know how packaged and predicted and rehearsed the responses to the questions posed in the debates are anyway--but a line has been (allegedly) crossed here, and that's the line Connor's book charts. Good stuff, and timely.

This book is an example of psuedo-intellectual overthinking of the highest order. It's dense, wordy and unreadable in every way. Why would any writer spend what appears to be LOTS of time and energy on this of all subjects: Ventriloquism's effect on CULTURE?!

The resultant product amounts to little more than an uninteresting mess.

Christoph Trappe has made an important contribution to the growing literature on the power and importance of storytelling for anyone engaged in leadership (including leadership in the family and community, not just the business), sales (and one way or another we are all in sales), promoting nonprofit causes and organizations, or just about any other endeavor that requires you to persuade, influence and inspire others. What makes this book so special is the way the author shares practical how-to strategies for crafting and telling an authentic story, often illustrated with real world examples. In particular, I found his strategies for sharing stories on blogs and social media to be especially helpful.

This book for me really hit the nail of the head. In the online space, there is so much junk. By being authentic you can cut through the clutter. In this book, Christoph teaching you how to do just that. I was really impressive by the vast information the book offers. Ranging from writing headlines to social media to content marketing and even giving real world examples. In particular, I liked some of the subtle points in the book. Like for example, not being perfect when telling stories and how to deal with those setbacks publicly. Overall, great book and one I would recommend to anyone looking to get into storytelling in marketing, which all people should.

Stefan Kostka received his Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin and served on the faculties of The Eastman School of Music and the University of Texas at Austin. In addition to Materials and Techniques of Post-Tonal Music, he is the author (with Roger Graybill) of Anthology of Music for Analysis and (with Dorothy Payne) of Tonal Harmony, With an Introduction to Twentieth Century Music. Kostka is now a University of Texas Professor Emeritus, and resides in northwest Massachusetts.

TOO EXPENSIVE FOR WHAT IT IS

I think it's a pretty good book. I'm in my 4th semester of conservatory-level theory and we needed to get this book for our section on post-tonal music. I mean, I don't see why you'd really wanna buy it unless you have to for a class. If I didn't have all this music experience, I'd probably not get much at all from the text.

TOO EXPENSIVE, THOUGH!!!!! I seriously paid $110 dollars for a skinny paperback book :(

The text is a series of idioms that take him through the day, from waking up "on the wrong side of the bed," to having a "long face" at lunch, to being "happy as a puppy with two tails" when he finally comes home to his dog. The illustrations interpret each idiom literally, often to comic effect: "we'd be in a real pickle if we missed the bus" is accompanied by a pickle-as-bus picture, while meeting the "Big Cheese" shows a principal wearing a dress made of Swiss cheese. Bloch's graphic style incorporates photographs of objects into pen-and-ink drawings, and the copious use of white space keeps the focus squarely on the words and their visual interpretations. Bloch’s clear pen-and-ink drawings with occasional photographic collage do a great job of juxtaposing fact and feeling in the wry scenarios that illustrate the literal meaning of common sayings. In one scene, for example, a young boy has ants in his pants and is laughing his head off, even as the teacher tells him to zip his lip. Whether beginning preschool for the first time or returning to grade school after vacation, readers will recognize the panic and the fantasy of being top banana, the joy of throwing the baby out with the bathwater, the need to bottle up your feelings, and the nurse who keeps an eye out. Cute book!

This is a very cute short story about a boy's first day at school. The 1-2 lines of text on each page include a commonly used metaphor like "cat got your tongue", "wrong side of the bed" and, of course, "butterflies in your stomach". The pictures, simple line drawings with color photo accents, visually depict the literal meaning of the phrase, like a cat running away with a pink tongue. You get the feeling you're seeing what the boy is imagining.

I would say this book is better for introducing the idea of a figure of speech than curing first-day-of-school worries, although it could be a starting place for that discussion as well. Younger children who are still concrete thinkers may not grasp the humor of the literal vs figurative use of the words. I would say most children would enjoy this from about 1st grade on up; it would be fun for older kids when learning about metaphors in English class. It made me smile:)

Charming, but a bit long

Reminds me of The King Who Rained by Fred Gwynne from when I was a kid and loved. I love the clear and simple pictures in t"Butterflies". I also like that the author has made all the figures of speech tie in to a topic kids can relate to--starting school. But I think many kids haven't heard of many of these expressions, so it's more fun for adults or older kids kids (upper elementary?) to read. Otherwise you first have to explain what being "in a pickle" means before kids would get the joke that the people are inside a pickle in the picture.

Do you ever think about how a child might interpret your words? Butterflies in My Stomach is a delightful look at idiomatic expressions, and how a child might take them literally. It is the first day of school, and the boy has actual butterflies inside his stomach, pictures going to school inside a pickle with wheels ("we'd be in a real pickle if we missed the bus"). Then, of course, it rains `cats and dogs' and he opens `a can of worms'. The whole story is fun to read, with the pen and ink illustrations showing the literal meaning of the phrase.

What a great way to help a kid laugh away the jitters of the first day of school! Also a good way to help a child look at the way words can mean something very different than the usual meanings, depending on how they are used, and for children who speak a different language at home, and may not be familiar with common idioms. Good scholastically as an early introduction to creative language, idioms and linguistics.

Moi, je ne parle pas bien français, mais j'ai lu ce livre, et je l'ai bien compris. C'est un livre de puissance et de vérité.
On se forcera de voir la deuxème guerre avec les yeux d'un soldat d'Allemagne. Il adore la France, il parle la langue, et toute sa vie, il adorait la culture et les gens. Il croit sincèrement que l'Allemange et la France se marieront et l'union sera incroyable. L'Allemange a ses musiciens et la France a ses écrivains. Ensemble, les deux pays auront beacoup de grandeur et de puissance.
On peut voir la guerre avec les yeux d'un oncle et sa nièce. Ils sont deux personnes qui n'a pas de nôms ni d'âges. Ils réprésent toute de France-sa blessure, ses gens, ses croyances, et ses rêves.
Le soldat est un homme qui préférait à vivre simplement dans la compagne de la France. Il est pôet et un muscien. Après la guerre, il voudrait de composer la musique à la mèsure de l'homme. C'est son chemin pour obtenir la vérité.
Qui peut détéster un homme comme ça, même s'il est votre ennemi?
Après avoir lu ce livre, vos vues de la France et l'Allemagne dans les années 1940 changeront. Peut-être on peut voir cette guerre avec les yeux des "ennemis". Peut-être les ennemis ne sont pas toujours comme méchants comme nous croyions qu'ils sont, n'est-ce pas?
