Just another textbook.
By Jessica
While loose-leaf textbooks are not ideal, that is how this particular textbook is sold everywhere I looked. It arrived just as expected & in wrapping. The loose-leaf pages are already hole punched so I put it all in a binder. I'm not sure why people are surprised by this and giving negative reviews when it is stated in the heading.

A lot of people were disappointed because because you get a bunch a pages
By Phoebe
READ BEFORE BUYING! A lot of people were disappointed because because you get a bunch a pages... that could fall apart because of no binding. You will have to buy a 2 inch folder for it. It's a textbook. Since I am not a business/management major... it is was it is. The text information were clear and easy to understand. What I loved about this book is that the pages are loose... it is a ~2 inch think book, so I loved the fact that I could take only the chapters I need out, put it in a smaller folder and take it to go. If you want to sell it again, just make sure you keep the front and back covers... all pages, and keep it in good condition.

Classical Mechanics, by G. ARULDHAS

This book offers an in-depth presentation of the mechanics of particles and systems. The material is thoroughly class-tested and hence eminently suitable as a textbook for a one-semester course in Classical Mechanics for postgraduate students of physics and mathematics. Besides, the book can serve as a useful reference for engineering students at the postgraduate level.

The book provides not only a complete treatment of classical theoretical physics, but also an enormous number of worked examples and problems to show students clearly how to apply abstract principles and mathematical techniques to realistic problems. While abstraction of theory is minimized, detailed mathematical analysis is provided wherever necessary.

Besides an all-embracing coverage of different aspects of classical mechanics, the rapidly growing areas of nonlinear dynamics and chaos are also included. The chapter on Central Force Motion includes topics like satellite parameters, orbital transfers and scattering problem. An extensive treatment of the essentials of small oscillations, which is crucial for the study of molecular vibrations, is included. Rigid body motion and special theory of relativity are also covered in two separate chapters.

Excellent Reference Text but Beware of Formatting Problems for Mathematical Symbols
By Jesse
As a graduate returning to study after 10 years out of academia, I found Goldstein (the course text) to be, while an excellent resource, a little difficult to follow at times, as I lack or have forgotten too much foundational Physics. Even though as far as I can tell so far he reaches about the same level, Aruldhas just seems to have a way of starting from more elementary principles and reaching the graduate level the book is aimed at quickly and concisely. As such, it's an excellent addition to my resources at hand as I tackle classical mechanics, and very well priced!

However, there's one small but significant problem with this text, for which reason this should only be a secondary resource. It appears to have been scanned and OCR'd from a hard copy book (or possible lecture notes) and therefore many symbols written within the text do not show up, or show incorrectly, which could be very misleading if it was your only reference text. For example. a small Greek delta and a lowercase 'd' both appear the same (a lowercase d) even though they are meant to represent closely related but conceptually very different quantities. Derivations (which make up the majority of non-standard text) are easy to follow as they are inserted as images, which come up fine. It's just when quantities are referred to in the text that it's problematic. I hope the author will fix this, as it would make this an excellent reference text on classical mechanics.

So if this were to be your main resource it would be confusing, or even dangerously misleading, but it makes an excellent secondary resource. But at its current price there's little to complain about, and it's the best three dollars I've spent in a long time!

From Library Journal
Ries and Trout, authors of some of the most popular titles in marketing published during the last decade ( Marketing Warfare , LJ 10/15/85; Positioning: The Battle for Your Mind , Warner, 1987; and Bottom-Up Marketing , McGraw, 1989), continue the same breezy style, with lots of anecdotes and insider views of contemporary marketing strategy. The premise behind this book is that in order for marketing strategies to work, they must be in tune with some quintessential force in the marketplace. Just as the laws of physics define the workings of the universe, so do successful marketing programs conform to the "22 Laws." Each law is presented with illustrations of how it works based on actual companies and their marketing strategies. For example, the "Law of Focus" states that the most powerful concept in marketing is "owning" a word in the prospect's mind, such as Crest's owning cavities and Nordstrom's owning service. The book is fun to read, contains solid information, and should be acquired by all public and business school libraries. It will be requested by readers of the authors' earlier titles.

Requires 'time' translation. Thought provoking
By Travis D Wright
There are a few major points to make, but I'll keep it brief.

1. It was writing about 25 yrs ago, pre-Internet. They products are both sold and marketed has changed, so you'll have to first understand his book within the written time period. Next you can then try to understand the laws as they would be applied today.

Example: Law of Line Extension says that you shouldn't use same brand name as you extend product line. However, Apple is a counter example. Then again Costco has a sub-brand 'Kirkland' that is very successful. I'm not doubting the rule but it seems it may be conditional.

2. The authors give examples and predictions that, with the view we have now in the future, don't play out how they expected. I think they predicted MCI to overtake AT&T as the top long distance phone company.

So, just rely on your judgement as you read through the laws and really try to test (evaluate) them in the current environment.

This book was recommended by many authors and podcasts I follow so that's what brought me to it. However, I now think there may have been a generation positively influenced by it 20 years ago that have since passed it down to the next generation of marketers/entrepreneurs.

Nota bad book though. Read it.

Outstanding book on positioning
By Matthew Coast
If you like their book, positioning, this is a great accompaniment to it. There's a lot of great information in there... although, there's still one thing that's confusing to me that it talked about in the other book and made no more clear in this one... that's what they mean exactly by line extension.

They took an entire chapter to dissuade you from line extensions and then talked about a company which is the top in its market with a line extension product they have... When is something a line extension and when is something not a line extension? And when is it okay to have line extensions which increase your income and when do line extensions hurt you?

Other than that, it's an excellent book. Convinced me to reposition myself in the market. And the impact of that has already been huge.

Usual Fabulous insights from the Authors
By trojan1976
This book is sensational. Compact and crammed with salient philosophy. The scenarios they present make obsolete conventional marketing.
Just today I read an article in WSJ that said Chevrolet truck sales are down, and they are taking shots at the leader, Ford's F-150. They used a "nifty" ad that shows concrete being dumped in each trucks bed. Silverado had barely scratched paint and a few dents, but 150 had holes punched through the floor. Conventional marketing. Completely useless!

You can't change peoples minds... just about every dude I know ( and me) considers F-150 the best. It's the perception that counts. It wouldn't matter if the Silverado was better. Ford scoffed at the marketing "stunt" as well they should. 150 will stay the leader indefinitely. Why didn't Chevrolet's marketing people read this book? They could have saved a whole bunch of money by not doing this campaign.

Parts of this book are so brilliant, and dense, that I found myself reading certain paragraphs several times to really grasp the concepts. I have several of the author's books, they are all excellent. The only flaw is that this book is 30 years old, so some predictions of certain businesses' prospects didn't come true. Did you ever try to change a woman's mind? Right. That's the rub. Once people think of a product or service as best, it is very difficult to change their minds down the road.

Alan Turing: The Enigma: The Book That Inspired the Film

A NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER

The official book behind the Academy Award-winning film The Imitation Game, starring Benedict Cumberbatch and Keira Knightley

It is only a slight exaggeration to say that the British mathematician Alan Turing (1912-1954) saved the Allies from the Nazis, invented the computer and artificial intelligence, and anticipated gay liberation by decades--all before his suicide at age forty-one. This New York Times-bestselling biography of the founder of computer science, with a new preface by the author that addresses Turing's royal pardon in 2013, is the definitive account of an extraordinary mind and life.

Capturing both the inner and outer drama of Turing's life, Andrew Hodges tells how Turing's revolutionary idea of 1936--the concept of a universal machine--laid the foundation for the modern computer and how Turing brought the idea to practical realization in 1945 with his electronic design. The book also tells how this work was directly related to Turing's leading role in breaking the German Enigma ciphers during World War II, a scientific triumph that was critical to Allied victory in the Atlantic. At the same time, this is the tragic account of a man who, despite his wartime service, was eventually arrested, stripped of his security clearance, and forced to undergo a humiliating treatment program--all for trying to live honestly in a society that defined homosexuality as a crime.

The inspiration for a major motion picture starring Benedict Cumberbatch and Keira Knightley, Alan Turing: The Enigma is a gripping story of mathematics, computers, cryptography, and homosexual persecution.

Amazon.com Review
Alan Turing died in 1954, but the themes of his life epitomize the turn of the millennium. A pure mathematician from a tradition that prided itself on its impracticality, Turing laid the foundations for modern computer science, writes Andrew Hodges:

Alan had proved that there was no "miraculous machine" that could solve all mathematical problems, but in the process he had discovered something almost equally miraculous, the idea of a universal machine that could take over the work of any machine.

During World War II, Turing was the intellectual star of Bletchley Park, the secret British cryptography unit. His work cracking the German's Enigma machine code was, in many ways, the first triumph of computer science. And Turing died because his identity as a homosexual was incompatible with cold-war ideas of security, implemented with machines and remorseless logic: "It was his own invention, and it killed the goose that laid the golden eggs."

Andrew Hodges's remarkable insight weaves Turing's mathematical and computer work with his personal life to produce one of the best biographies of our time, and the basis of the Derek Jacobi movie Breaking the Code. Hodges has the mathematical knowledge to explain the intellectual significance of Turing's work, while never losing sight of the human and social picture:

In this sense his life belied his work, for it could not be contained by the discrete state machine. At every stage his life raised questions about the connection (or lack of it) between the mind and the body, thought and action, intelligence and operations, science and society, the individual and history.

And Hodges admits what all biographers know, but few admit, about their subjects: "his inner code remains unbroken." Alan Turing is still an enigma. --Mary Ellen Curtin

The Imitation Game, Winner of the 2015 Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay
Winner of the 2015 (27th) USC Libraries Scripter Award, University of Southern California Libraries
One of The Guardian's Best Popular Physical Science Books of 2014, chosen by GrrlScientist

"Scrupulous and enthralling."--A. O. Scott, New York Times

"One of the finest scientific biographies ever written."--Jim Holt, New Yorker

"Andrew Hodges' 1983 book Alan Turing: The Enigma, is the indispensable guide to Turing's life and work and one of the finest biographies of a scientific genius ever written."--Michael Hiltzik, Los Angeles Times

"Turing's rehabilitation from over a quarter-century's embarrassed silence was largely the result of Andrew Hodges's superb biography, Alan Turing: The Enigma (1983; reissued with a new introduction in 2012). Hodges examined available primary sources and interviewed surviving witnesses to elucidate Turing's multiple dimensions. A mathematician, Hodges ably explained Turing's intellectual accomplishments with insight, and situated them within their wider historical contexts. He also empathetically explored the centrality of Turing's sexual identity to his thought and life in a persuasive rather than reductive way."--Michael Saler, Times Literary Supplement

"On the face of it, a richly detailed 500-page biography of a mathematical genius and analysis of his ideas, might seem a daunting proposition. But fellow mathematician and author Hodges has acutely clear and often extremely moving insight into the humanity behind the leaping genius that helped to crack the Germans' Enigma codes during World War II and bring about the dawn of the computer age. . . . This melancholy story is transfigured into something else: an exploration of the relationship between machines and the soul and a full-throated celebration of Turing's brilliance, unselfconscious quirkiness and bravery in a hostile age."--Sinclair McKay, Wall Street Journal

"A first-class contribution to history and an exemplary work of biography."--I. J. Good, Nature

"An almost perfect match of biographer and subject. . . . [A] great book."--Ray Monk, Guardian

"A superb biography. . . . Written by a mathematician, it describes in plain language Turing's work on the foundations of computer science and how he broke the Germans' Enigma code in the Second World War. The subtle depiction of class rivalries, personal relationships, and Turing's tragic end are worthy of a novel. But this was a real person. Hodges describes the man, and the science that fascinated him--which once saved, and still influences, our lives."--Margaret Boden, New Scientist

"Andrew Hodges's magisterial Alan Turing: The Enigma . . . is still the definitive text."--Joshua Cohen, Harper's

"Andrew Hodges's biography is a meticulously researched and written account detailing every aspect of Turing's life. . . . This account of Turing's life is a definitive scholarly work, rich in primary source documentation and small-grained historical detail."--Mathematics Teacher

"Tells a powerful story that combines professional success and personal tragedy."--Nancy Szokan, Washington Post

"[A] really excellent biography. . . . The great thing about this book is that the author is a mathematician and can explain the details of Turing's work--as a scientist, mathematician, and a code breaker--in a way that is easy to understand. He is also wonderful at the emotional nuance of Alan's life, who was a somewhat odd--a student was assigned to him in school to help him maintain a semblance of tidiness in his appearance, rooms and school work and at Bletchley Park he was known for chaining his tea mug to a pipe--but he was also charming and intelligent and Hodges brings all the aspects of his personality and life into sharp focus."--Off the Shelf

"This book is an incredibly detailed and meticulously researched biography of Alan Turing. Reading it is a melancholy experience, since you know from the outset that the ending is a tragic one and that knowledge overshadows you throughout. While the author divides the text into two parts, it actually reads like a play in four acts. . . . This book is Turing's memorial, and one that does justice to the subject."--Katherine Safford-Ramus, MAA Reviews

"The new paperback edition of the 1983 book that inspired the film, with an updated introduction by Oxford mathematics professor Andrew Hodges, is an exhilarating, compassionate and detailed biography of a complicated man."--Jane Ciabattari, BBC

"If [The Imitation Game] does nothing else but send you, as it did me, to Alan Hodges's Alan Turing: The Enigma (1983, newly prefaced in the 2014 Princeton University Press edition) it more than justifies its existence. A great read, Hodges's intellectual biography depicts Turing as a brilliant mathematician; a crucial pioneering figure in the theorization and engineering of digital computing; and the biggest brain in Bletchley Park's Hut #8."--Amy Taubin, Artforum

"It is indeed the ultimate biography of Alan Turing. It will bring you as close as possible to his enigmatic personality."--Adhemar Bultheel, European Mathematical Society

"A book whose time has finally come. I found it to be a page-turner in spite of the occasionally esoteric explanations of mathematical theories that reminded of why Brooklyn Technical High School was not the wisest choice for me."--Terrance, Paris Readers Circle

"Thanks to the movie The Imitation Game, Alan Turing has emerged from history's shadows, where his memory had languished for decades. For anyone whose interest in the pioneering computer scientist, mathematician, and logician was piqued by the film, the book that served as the film's source material, Andrew Hodges's exhaustive biography Alan Turing: The Enigma, has the answers."--Frank Caso, Simply Charly

From the Back Cover

"One of the finest scientific biographies I've ever read: authoritative, superbly researched, deeply sympathetic, and beautifully told."--Sylvia Nasar, author of A Beautiful Mind

"A captivating, compassionate portrait of a first-rate scientist who gave so much to a world that in the end cruelly rejected him. Perceptive and absorbing, Andrew Hodges's book is scientific biography at its best."--Paul Hoffman, author of The Man Who Loved Only Numbers

"A remarkable and admirable biography."--Simon Singh, author of The Code Book and Fermat's Enigma

"A first-rate presentation of the life of a first-rate scientific mind.... It is hard to imagine a more thoughtful and compassionate portrait of a human being."--from the Foreword by Douglas Hofstadter

One of the few books on my 'keep forever' list
By Thomas D. Jennings
Without this book, the real Alan Turing might fade into obscurity or at least the easy caricature of an eccentric British mathematician. And to the relief of many, because Turing was a difficult person: an unapologetic homosexual in post-victorian england; ground-breaking mathematician; utterly indifferent to social conventions; arrogantly original (working from first principles, ignoring precedents); with no respect for professional boundaries (a 'pure' mathematician who taught himself engineering and electronics).
His best-known work is his 1936 'Computable Numbers' paper, defining a self-modifying, stored-program machine. He used these ideas to help build code-breaking methods and machinery at Bletchley Park, England's WWII electronic intelligence center. This work, much still classified today, led directly to the construction of the world's first stored-program, self-modifying computer, in 1948.
Computers were always symbol-manipulators to Alan, not 'number crunchers', the predominant view even to von Neumann, and into the 60's and 70's. He designed many basic software concepts (interpreter, floating point), most of which were ignored (he umm wasn't exactly good at promoting his ideas). By 1948 Alan had moved on to studying human and machine intelligence, as a user of computers, again with his lack of social niceties and radical thinking, some of his ideas were baffling or embarrassing until 'rediscovered' decades later as brilliant insights into intelligence. His 'Turing test' of intelligence dates from this period, and is still widely misunderstood.
Poor Alan; his refusal to deceive himself or others and "go along" with the conventions of the time regarding sexuality caused him (and other homosexuals then) great problems; early Cold War England was not a good time to be gay, or a misfit, especially one with deep knowledge of war-time secrecy (he was technical crypto liason to the U.S., and one of the few with broad knowledge of operations at Bletchley, since he defined so much of it, in a time of extreme compartmentalization). His sexual escapades eventually got him in trouble, and his increasing isolation and the fact that he simply couldn't acknowledge some of his life's work due to secrecy, probably influenced his suicide at the age of 42.
I first discovered Turing-the-person in A HISTORY OF COMPUTING IN THE 20TH CENTURY (Metropolis, Howlett, Gian-Carlo Rota; Acedemic Press, 1980), where I.J. Good wrote, "we didn't know he was a homosexual until after the war... if the security people had found out [and removed him]... we might have lost the war". This led me to look for books on Turing, and then the Hodges book magically appeared on the shelf.
I am grateful that Hodges researched his life as well as his work, as far as the data allows. Knowing the whole is always important, but I think critical in Alan Turing's life.
My only complaint with the book is that it makes a number of assumptions or implications that seem to require knowledge of British culture, both contemporary and of the period, which I still didn't pick up on a re-reading. But it barely detracts from the book.
Clearly, I rate this one of the most important books I've ever read.

The Classic Biography of the Computer's Progenitor
By Martin D. Davis
It is a pleasure to see that the wonderful biography of Alan Turing by Andrew Hodges is once again available. With loving care, Hodges follows Turing's life from the clumsy child whose largely absentee parents were caught up in maintaining the British imperial presence in India, to the mathematically precocious adolescent facing teachers for whom mathematics imparted a bad smell to a room, finally coming into his own at Cambridge University where he wrote the paper that provided the conceptual underpinnings of the all-purpose computers we all use today. Hodges carefully explains Turing's crucial contributions to breaking the secret codes that the German military used all through the Second World War, confident in the security provided by their "Enigma" machines. Turing's highly successful war-time practical work known only to a few, his efforts after the war to enable the construction of a general purpose electronic computer were frustrated by bureaucratic mismanagement and by a lack of appreciation of the value of his ideas, many of which came to the fore much later. A burglary of his house that a prudent man would have kept to himself, led to Turing's homosexuality coming to official notice when he reported the crime to the police. He was prosecuted for "gross indecency" and sentenced to a course of injections of estrogen intended to diminish his sex drive. We will never know how much this barbaric treatment contributed to his suicide or what he might have accomplished had his life not been cut short. This is a book that will fascinate readers interested in the history of the computer, in the story of how the German submarine fleet threatening to strangle England was defeated, and in the tragic story of the persecution for his sex life of a man who should have been prized as a national hero.

Makes You Rethink
By Patti from Tennessee
This is the greatest book for thought provoking that I have ever read since the Holy Bible. I have been reading the Bible for over 10 years, noting and studying the vast knowledge and information available to those who seek it out. I keep telling people, "Just read the book"!
Napoleon Hill's book has a similiar effect. His study on humans who succeed and why takes you to a new level of insight into positive thinking and helps you grasp insight into the availability of a higher universal intelligence. Wow! It will take all the negativity and procrastinating thoughts and dump them in the trash barrel along with lack of faith in yourself. No educational seminar or college course can pack in this much knowledge if you will "Just read the book"!

I have many of Mr. Hill's books and find all of them to be very educational and useful. This one is no different. I was in the process of buying one book, then saw this one (that is a compilation of 3 books) and bought it instead. It is great. I would highly recommend this or any of his books to people interested in personal development and motivation.

The Power of Tests (Language in Social Life), by Elana Shohamy

Language in Social Life is a major series which highlights the importance of language to an understanding of issues of social and professional concern. It will be of practical relevance to all those wanting to understand how the ways we communicate both influence and are influenced by the structures and forces of contemporary social institutions.

In all modern societies individuals are subject to tests, whether to enter educational programs, to pass from one level to the next or to grant certificates to practice. Yet, tests are powerful tools which are often introduced in undemocratic and unethical ways as disciplinary tools for carrying out various policy agendas. Tests can be detrimental to people's lives as they are capable of affecting and defining the knowledge and behaviour of those who are being tested.

The Power of Tests applies a critical perspective of language tests by examining their uses and consequences in education and society and by viewing tests not as isolated events but rather as embedded in social, educational and political contexts.

The book is divided into four parts: the first part establishes the power of tests through echoing the voices of test takers, describing the features of the power of tests, and the temptations that tests offer to bureaucrats who use them for power and control. The second part reports on studies that provide empirical evidence about intentions and effects of a number of large scale language tests. The third part interprets the results by examining their consequences on education and society, arriving at a model of tests' use. The final section of the book offers strategies for controlling and minimising the misuses of tests by introducing the notion of Critical Language Testing which calls for the examination of the consequences and misuses of tests, monitoring of power and pointing to their unethical uses. It also provides a comprehensive discussion of the responsibilities of language testers, including a new Code of Ethics, as well as strategies for guarding and protecting the rights of test takers.

Great Book!
By Melanie D. McGrath
This is a great book on critical language testing. In this era of NCLB, we should think more carefully as to how tests can be used as disciplinary tools and/or tools to manufacture and control certain behaviors. We all need to think more critically about how the results of tests are used in this current era of high-stakes accountability.
