Nonfiction. Self-Help. Mental Health. Philosophy. Ethics. Winner of the 2015 Living Now Book Award for Personal Growth. Is not being happy really so bad? In HIGH ON LOW: HARNESSING THE POWER OF UNHAPPINESS, Wilhelm Schmid persuasively argues that far from preventing us from living a full and successful life, being unhappy be it in terms of discontent, melancholy, sadness, or depressive mood is an inherent part of a well-rounded, active, and creative life. Rather than attempting to treat unhappiness as an unwelcome interloper on our perpetual quest for happiness, we should, Schmid suggests, draw on and harness the very power of not being happy.

Unhappiness Holds Its Own Strengths: Here's How to Harness Them!
By D. Donovan
High on Low: Harnessing the Power of Unhappiness is difficult to easily categorize; and that may prove its ultimate strength, even though it presents somewhat of a marketing challenge.

It's of diminutive stature (less than a pocket-sized paperback in height), it toes the line between philosophy, spirituality, and self-help guide, and it posits a surprising thought: does the definition of living a full, successful life mean never (or seldom) being unhappy? Wilhelm Schmid offers the perspective that discontent, sadness and depression are actually an important part of leading a well-rounded, active life - and that unhappiness should not be 'treated away' so much as accepted as part of this process.

In the ongoing search for chronic happiness, have we forgotten the underlying benefits of sadness? This little book covers the gray areas between melancholy and depression, finding meaning in a sense of place where one is unhappy, and pinpointing the real values in life.

Unhappiness holds its own strengths in powers not to be found in an ongoing state of contentment, and this book shows how to recognize and accept these positive points.

Without the bad, there can be no adequate recognition of what is truly good: this and the idea that melancholy actually brings with it its own form of strength makes High on Low an unusual perspective recommended for any who would understand the formula of real psychological and spiritual success and its many underlying influences.

Great Incomplete Book
By Bill Reich
The only thing I don't like about this book is the title. This is a great book for limit holdem cash games. It is applicable in online or live play and would be helpful if the game were tight or loose, passive or aggressive. In fact, one of the great strengths of the book is how it helps one evaluate the table and play according to who is actually there and not according to how some group of players were playing at a $40/80 table in Las Vegas in 1978.

The emphasis on table selection and on flexibility in play makes this a valuable tool for increasing ones profits or even for the beginner. Rather than giving formulas (formulae?) Carson gives guidelines for thinking about situations. The tables of starting hands that he provides should be taken with a grain of salt, as he says himself.

But enough of Mr. Nice Guy, why did I call it incomplete?

1: He only touches on big-bet Holdem, No-Limit and Pot-Limit. The advice he gives on it big-bet is very good. In fact some of it is extremely valuable. However, it is only a splash in the very lage pond. This is understandable because the NL boom had not arrived at the time the book was released. NL tourneys were common but cash games all over the country were still overwhelmingly limit.

While understandable, it is a shame becuase NL has become more important as the months go by and because Mr. Carson has been a succesful NL cash player and knows what he is talking aobut.

2: His tournament advice is also brief, not inspired and not worth mentioning. If all you want to do is play tourneys, the book is worth the low price but that's about it.

So why do I give it five *s?

Because my hourly rate in the LHE games at Foxwoods, which was already good, doubled in the few months after I read this book and absorbed its ideas.

Very good book in need of a new title.
By Rodney Myers
This is one of the best Texas Hold'em books out there. Gary has an interesting way of looking at the game that is thought provoking. His insights can make you a better player, but I suggest trying to digest the material here slowly. It is easy to misunderstand or misapply the concepts here. Like any other good poker book, this is a book that you should study, rather than just read.

There is very little discussion of the specifics of pot-limit, no-limit, spread-limit, and tournament poker in this book. The book does discuss these topics, but those chapters are thin and seem to be added as an afterthought. Nonetheless, much of the material is applicable to any form of Texas Hold'em, once you understand it well. It does seem that Gary is primarily a limit Hold'em player, or that he was when he wrote this book.

Also, Gary Carson is an active participant of the Usenet group rec.gambling.poker. Gary has clarified some of the concepts in his book on this public forum.

Helps to think like a poker player, not a good first book
By S. Bank
Carson's book is one of the more underrated and less well known of the good poker books. I feel compelled to write a review because of some of the other reviews on Amazon. This shouldn't be your first book on Hold'em (read and reread Lee Jones), because he only half-heartedly tries to teach you the basics (eg. starting hand requirements). He assumes you generally know what you're doing and tries to teach you to think like a poker player.

Page 204 was really important for me, where he discusses "book players." This really hit home and because I was guilty of everything he said about them. I don't think it was a coincidence that I went from an almost break-even player to a consistent winner after reading this. His discussion of other player stereotypes and a play-by-play analysis of two hands are also quite useful. While none of this is unique and you can find similar content elsewhere, I really like the way Carson explains his thinking - he's a much better poker writer than most and he really helped me to think about different situations. It's definitely worth $10!

In response to what "Card Player" said about not worrying about other bigger flushes: I don't believe he advocates blindly raising and reraising because no one ever has another flush. He simply points out that the odds that someone else has two cards of the same suit are reduced because five of the suited cards are accounted for (your two, plus three on the board). I've had weak flushes raised by a dead hand like pocket kings or trips FAR more often than I've lost to a bigger flush. True, you'll get beaten sometimes, but the situation is a winner in the long run.

Smart Machines: IBM's Watson and the Era of Cognitive Computing (Columbia Business School Publishing), by John E. Kelly III, Steve Hamm

We are crossing a new frontier in the evolution of computing and entering the era of cognitive systems. The victory of IBM's Watson on the television quiz show Jeopardy! revealed how scientists and engineers at IBM and elsewhere are pushing the boundaries of science and technology to create machines that sense, learn, reason, and interact with people in new ways to provide insight and advice.

In Smart Machines, John E. Kelly III, director of IBM Research, and Steve Hamm, a writer at IBM and a former business and technology journalist, introduce the fascinating world of "cognitive systems" to general audiences and provide a window into the future of computing. Cognitive systems promise to penetrate complexity and assist people and organizations in better decision making. They can help doctors evaluate and treat patients, augment the ways we see, anticipate major weather events, and contribute to smarter urban planning. Kelly and Hamm's comprehensive perspective describes this technology inside and out and explains how it will help us conquer the harnessing and understanding of "big data," one of the major computing challenges facing businesses and governments in the coming decades. Absorbing and impassioned, their book will inspire governments, academics, and the global tech industry to work together to power this exciting wave in innovation.

An engaging guide to the future of knowledge, sensing, decision-making and discovery
By Stephen Baker
Imagine this. The baby is sleeping upstairs. One of those monitors in her room plays her noises down to the kitchen. The parents can hear her thrash and gurgle. But those sounds are in the background. More prominent is a computer voice that announces: "The baby wet her diapers at 1:23. She's been awake for four minutes." She cries. Is it time to nurse her already? No, the computer says. Her stomach hurts.

I picked up this idea from Smart Machines: IBM's Watson and the Era of Cognitive Computing. It is co-written by John Kelly, the director of IBM Research and Steve Hamm, my friend and former colleague at BusinessWeek.

I wrote a book about 2011 Watson (Final Jeopardy). So you might think I would find this material familiar. But it's a very useful, concise and engaging guide to the future of computing--which is also the future of knowledge, sensing, decision-making and discovery. I read it in about two hours. It led me from employment opportunities for Watson to frontiers of Big Data and the physics of new computing. It's hard to summarize the future of cognitive computing, but these two sentences come pretty close: "In the programmable-computing era, people have to adapt to the way computers work. In the cognitive era, computers will adapt to people."

Returning briefly to the baby example, the idea is that apps will eventually be able to crunch enough data to decode their noises and, effectively, put words in their mouths. Of course, not all babies will use the same noises. I imagine that the program will come with a standard template, and that parents will have ways to correct the machine's early mistakes, helping it to customize its analysis for each baby. And as those fixes make their way to the cloud service, it will grow more sophisticated, just like Google Voice or Siri.

Another similar challenge, I imagine, will be to interpret the noises and gestures of animals, and to get them also to talk to us. This animal analysis could probably benefit from smell sensors, another innovation previewed in the book. Such sensors could pick up molecules of chemicals signaling an animal's fear, confusion, hunger and sexual drive.

Do we want a machine announcing that Rover is hungry or horny or needs to go out for one reason or another? That could be too much information. But the marketplace will iron out those issues. For now, we at least know from a very good IBM book that the technology is en route.

Disappointing and simplistic...
By David A. Caswell
Very disappointing. This book reads like a primer on 'computers' for non-technical people circa 1985. It is simplistic and filled with speculative use cases of the most cliched kind - they even have a varient of the 'find an italian restaurant' use case in there. My guess is that this essentially intended as a kind of brochure for IBM services aimed at technically illiterate government procurement people. The only good thing I can say about this book is that the term 'cognitive computing' is a brilliant label for this new world of machine learning, big data and sensors/apps that is just beginning - all that stuff is obviously very real but you won't learn much about it here. I really wish Kelly and Hamm had been able to break through the IBM rah-rah and give us some real insight into how IBM is contributing to this new world.

(Way) Beyond Watson: what to expect in "smart machines"
By Angie Boyter
In Smart Machines, authors John Kelly III and Steve Hamm provide the general reader with a well-written, interesting guide to the future of cognitive computing, "smart machines" humans can use to "penetrate complexity and comprehend the world around us so that we can make better decisions."
The authors describe how computers work and how many experts imagine computers will have to work in the future to achieve "smartness". They discuss tools that are being developed today, current research that looks auspicious for future developments, and areas for future research that they believe to hold promise. The emphasis is on work done at IBM, but efforts by others are also mentioned. A central theme to the new technology is how to cope with the vast increase in data available, and the main approach discussed is various ways to move processing closer to the data to eliminate the time lost in moving the data to the processor.
Kelly and Hamm envision a cognitive system as analogous to Russian nesting dolls and devote separate chapters to each. The layers are:
Chapter 2: how humans interact with computers and get them to do what we want,
Chapter 3: how we organize and interpret data,
Chapter 4: (possibly my favorite chapter) how we enhance computers to have the machine equivalent of ALL of our senses, not just the obvious sight and hearing, but also touch, taste, and smell.
Chapter 5: how we put together the physical components of a computer, the computer architecture, and
Chapter 6: how we build the core components to manipulate matter at the molecular and atomic scale, exploit nanotechnology, and invent a new physics of computing in order to increase processing speeds significantly.
The final chapter imagines how cognitive technology can help run the city of the future.
This is a survey of a rather large field (or fields); readers who become interested in some aspect will want to follow up references to get details. To those not familiar with work on intelligent machines it is a fascinating introduction. Those who have already read in the field are not likely to learn anything new, but the material is structured in a way that brings coherence to a subject that specialists tend to see only in bits and pieces. Bone Tongue: A Collection of Poetry, by Scherezade Siobhan

Bone Tongue is the anatomy of the sharpest rose. It is sculpted from each petal's sleeping body. This is a collection of diary entries from the poet when she was suffering from severe clinical depression and it gathers the repetition of every ache into a filigree of poems.

Maybe these aren't even poems, Maybe each page carries a cult of foxes gathered around a fire waiting for the midnight to fall. Maybe it is a single hour caught in the butterfly effect. Maybe it is the distance between death and dreaming. The tongue has calcified the way a mind makes a relic out of every memory. Days are chiselled into verses that get carved onto this hard-shelled tabula rasa. It is a constellation of cicatrices. It screams. It kicks its own cure. It walks like a war song - naked, bloody & glowing.

Finding Scherezade was like a blow to the head
By Agnieszka M
In 2014 I stumbled upon Scherezade Siobhan’s tumblr account by accident. In fact, I found her through some post in which one writer was gushing over this mysterious figure, viperslang (Scherezade Siobhan herself) and a couple of other poets whose presence and words served as major alterations to his readerly and writerly life.

I wanted to make a comeback back then, to re-dive into poetry writing and immersing myself in Tumblr’s writing community again. And, hopefully, honing my non-existent skills. Finding Scherezade was like a blow to the head. It was both a blessing and a nightmare – as all of a sudden I was bombarded with something more mature and insightful than I had expected. In fact, it was quite unlike what I had expected.

Hers was a new level of writing, for me. Wordplay, intricacies, difficult words, beautiful imagery. Magnificence. I got burnt. I wasn’t used to this. I wanted to get used to this and, over time, I did. Devoted myself to reading her words carefully, fully receptive. And I was very excited to hear that she was to have her first book – “Bone Tongue” published by Thought Catalogue.

“Bone Tongue” comprises of 11 poems written during the time when Scherezade Siobhan was flogged by the merciless whip of severe clinical depression. Each poem is a day – starting from day 1, ending on day 101 which seems like the last day of horror but isn’t necessarily la fin (although it does sound like a step forward). These poems tackle the themes of loss, hope, her femininity, the terrible struggle and love.

In the second poem “day 100: a phoenix too frequent” she recounts in detail what makes her feel whole: regular daily activities like doing laundry, taking care of animals, sitting under the tree. It has a great, melodic flow to it, every simple activity an explosion of fantastic imagery that has left an imprint on the chest of my memory. I read it four or five times already and each time I was equally glad I could experience this poem anew.

“to pretend you failed the recipe so your mother can

struggle with her glasses and remind you how cooking isn’t

about perfection but happiness”

Incidentally, this might be my favourite poem from the book.

In “day 67: you are the street that never sleep” she talks about love – overwhelming, unrelenting; a confession that is far too powerful to be ignored. It ignites and wakes you from your own slumber as you latch onto another line. In the rawness of “day 12: saints and ghosts” I felt remarkably sad, as Scherezade’s own sadness was almost palpable, getting more and more solid with every single word. At times it felt as though I was reading about a dead person (which might actually be the case – but then again I cannot be sure).

Another favourite of mine would be “day 101: be done”. I return to it every now and then, as it’s like a mantra you should hammer into your head and recall every single time you feel like you’re not enough, like you’ve failed again. It is a great closing line, a sudden leap. You can realise, alongside Scherezade, how powerful, strong and non-disposable you are.

“be done. with being told how

to shroud your scars”

If I could, I’d squeeze the entirety of “be done” in here, but it’s impossible for obvious reasons. I will then limit myself to posting snippet that I deemed perfection:

“with putting a silencer

on your tongue

every time you wanted to shout.”

In her writing Scherezade appears to know herself very well, as though she’s explored herself through her past experiences and struggles very thoroughly. She doesn’t shy away from depicting the reality as it is, she’s not scared of showing. Moreover, while reading her words I don’t feel lied to. The tone is sure, personal, genuine.

There is an ascent to her descent, here.

I’m recommending “Bone Tongue” to anyone who’s looking for quality poetry that is like a permanent tattoo on your mind after you’ve read once, twice, ten times. You won’t be disappointed.

Clever use of words, however; the feeling I left with was something more cerebral and less genuine and heartfelt. I also expected more poetry for a kindle read.

From the Inside Flap
"This is a timely book, written with great clarity, and full of valuable insights. It will be essential reading for experienced professionals and for newcomers to commodity derivatives alike."
—Andrew Chisholm, Consultant and Author

"Neil's book is quite timely as the number of institutions gearing up their commodities trading capabilities continues to grow. As he rightly points out, good research is hard to come by in the vast world of commodities. Neil has done a brilliant job in organizing the book and laying out the foundations of the different markets, as well as tackling the more advanced concepts. His years of experience as a trainer, has prepared him to explain the most simple, to the most complex topics. He has clearly been able to make the transition from trainer to author. The commodities world can seem arcane but Neil has 'cracked' this unique asset class with a final product that all participants will be able to use."
—Ken Kapner, President and CEO Global, Financial Market Institute Inc.

Good Intro to Commodity Derivatives
By V. Ghazarian
This book is a nice overview of over-the-counter traded products in the Energy and Commodity markets. This book is organized like a Wall St primer, it starts with the overview of the particular market fundamentals and then gives examples of some derivatives related to the specific market. Unlike most books on derivatives this book is not very quantitative, but provides a good intro to the growing world of Energy and Commodity derivatives.

This excellent book can help teachers to understand their potential role ...
By Mark Forget
This excellent book can help teachers to understand their potential role as motivators of students in learning situations, and it helped me to better understand why students of all ages and abilities love to tackle difficult text in the three-step content-literacy-based classroom. Piquing the SEEKING drive in the pre-reading Motivation stage of the class leads to purposeful engaged reading in the Acquisition phase, and the subsequent higher-order thinking in the eXtension phase. Repeatedly experiencing the brain chemistry described in this book leads to the development of habits of mind that can lead to a lifetime of successful and enjoying learning experiences.

This is a great book to help guide you through your students minds
By cole
This is a great book to help guide you through your students minds. We (teachers) often remove ourselves from where the students are and how they think. This book goes through the brain processes and how you can apply concepts through those processes. I feel that it leans towards elementary ages, but is still very applicable to middle/secondary. It also leans towards constructivism (Vygotsky & Piaget) and application. A good read when you're struggling with attentiveness.

Each book gets worse
By VK
I gave the first book 3 stars - because the setting was original, the premise was fresh and consequently, i was willing to overlook the choppy writing.

But the remaining 2.5 books are absolutely putrid - this is, possibly, one of the worst fantasy books i have had the misfortune of reading in a very long time. Why 2.5? Because I read the 2nd book, skimmed the 3rd and gave up half-way through the 4th. That should give you an idea of how completely and utterly disinterested i was in the story or any of the characters.

Where do I start?

For starters, the writing is puerile. It really comes across as having been written by a teenager just getting started with writing: there is no polish to the prose, the phrasing is choppy and the author spends a lot of times repeating the same ideas (mainly to do with how tough the Saaba Whatever are, and the mysteriousness of the wizard, WhoCaresAboutHisName) and ignoring pretty much everything else.

And what he focuses on is so inconsequential to the main plot, it makes you want to slam your head on a brick wall. There is a war going on, and the supreme general of the armed forces of the most powerful Empire basically gathers his soldiers and personally drills them like a sergeant. Apparently, there are no layers of officers between him and the soldiers. The senior members of the Empire know a war is coming, but there is no mention of any strategic preparations or such (other than the General personally trying to train his soldiers). The Empire is supposed to be so large and all-powerful but his writing style and exceedingly unambitious scope makes it seem as if the army is the size of a few score men. However, that doesnt stop large groups of Imperial soldiers to appear elsewhere when needed.

Large scale events just happen in a few paragraphs. Evacuation of a city? Done. Invasion and destruction of a town? Done. However, the author has time to use large portions of a book to describe each of the 7 meetings Andover has with the Saaba Whatever gods - and each of those meetings follows pretty much the same template, so it really is the same experience narrated 7 times Well, it fills pages, atleast.

When he does get around to the other characters, he just seems to lose a sense of perspective. There is one scene where the Investigator or Interrogator or whatever is trying to interrogate the members of the royal family. Apparently, he keeps them all penned up in a room and just stares at them for half a day without speaking. And by watching them, he knows who is innocent. Which is interesting, because he - and us, the readers - have ALREADY been told who is responsible for the crime that he is investigating, and that entire arc is quite minor anyway. SO WHAT IS THE POINT OF SPENDING SO MUCH TIME ON THIS???

Another example: there is a section in Book 4 when a character who has been missing for the last 2 books is reintroduced, and the author chooses to spend 3 pages expanding on the fact that she and her suitor havent had sex, are saving themselves for marriage and are getting off via handjobs and dry-humping (really). This is in the middle of a war of survival.

That's when i stopped reading.

The Taalor Whatever are, of course, invincible and their gods make a convenient Deus Ex Machina - the other side has a powerful wizard who can destroy continents? Taalor Gods to the rescue. Character died? Taalor Gods to the rescue. But the other side gets its own DEM as well.
4 books in, there seems to be no real sense of urgency.

In this and the next 2 books, this is what happens (no, it isnt a spoiler - there is nothing here that isnt even remotely interesting or suspenseful):
- the Saaba Whatever invade.
- no one can beat the Saaba Whatever
- they attack the capital city and a DEM occurs which saves the Empire - atleast for the time being

That. Is. It.

The author has taken a very interesting premise and mired it in extreme banality - and this is primarily due to lack of writing skills.

If you are trying to decide whether or not to buy this series, do yourself a favor and dont. Read the airline magazine a second time instead (that's what I did).

A decent story told in a simple style
By R. Bodenstedt
The Blasted Lands tells a decent story in a simple, extremely accessible manner. Like the first book, it's poorly edited and contains many misspellings, incorrect word choices, and other mistakes. But, all in all, it's a decent read if you're not looking for anything too sophisticated or deep. I doubt if I'll read any more of Mr. Moore's books, I just can't live on a diet of popcorn.

Invertebrate ZoologyFrom Oxford University Press

The first edition of Invertebrate Zoology offered undergraduates studying the biology and evolution of invertebrate animals a new approach to the subject. While the text of the second edition has been revised significantly, the original format has been maintained and enhanced. The chapters, written by expert authors, provide contemporary accounts of the functional, physiological, and reproductive biology of the invertebrate phyla. The final chapter of the book reviews modern interpretations of the phylogeny of invertebrates, based on cladistic and molecular evidence. The study of invertebrates has advanced rapidly in recent years, and several major changes are highlighted in this new edition. Separate chapters now reflect the recognition that the former 'aschelminths' include two disparate groups of phyle, a protostome group related to annelids and molluscs, and an ecdysozoan group related to arthropods. All classifications have been updated, and the relationships among the phyla have been further clarified. Generously illustrated throughout, and with an emphasis on readability and clear presentation, this book will be a valuable resource for all students of invertebrate zoology as well as those involved in current advances in the biological sciences.

Review

"A text for a one-semester introductory undergraduate course for biology students either intending to specialize in invertebrates or needing a foundation in them for other specialties. It takes account of more crowded curricula than earlier models assumed, and developments in the science. The first edition was published in 1998."--SciTech Book News
