A haunting adventure, that never leaves you.

I'm not sure where to begin with this review. Though it's not really a review in the purest sense, it's more about how I feel towards this wonderful adventure. I love Ravenloft; I can't reiterate that fact enough. To the point that I've "taken possession of it" as if it were "mine". I know that's a little "melodramatic" but I'm thinking you understand what I mean. I'm writing this in the hopes that someone else will be inspired to pick this tome up and enjoy it as much as I have over all these years.

The product description and the other reviewers mentioned some of the key aspects of this adventure - which I don't think need to be rehashed by me. But if you do purchase this (and I HIGHLY recommend it), hopefully it will touch you like it did me 25 years ago.

This was the first Dungeons & Dragons "module" I bought and it has "haunted" me ever since. I have explored the Ravenloft campaign setting inspired by this book and even into "Gothic Earth" and later derivatives. But this was the first... and best of the best. To me, it was the first Dungeons & Dragons product that had a "soul".

If this is to be your first encounter with Count Strahd and the cold, haunted parapets of his dreary, forlorn home, I envy you. You're about to experience an astonishing story of dark romance, cursed magics and unspeakable horror. You're about to plunge through the mists of fear, madness and a "tragedy darker than the night itself". Like a lifelong, welcome friend, this melancholy adventure always calls and brings me back. It should be played every few years - the lights low with serious role playing friends on Halloween or chill nights in late December.

Trust me. If you have any intrest in role playing games and TRUE gothic horror - the original Stoker's Dracula or Shelley's Frankenstein you will not regret playing this. And like it has for me, it will haunt with you forever.

One of the best AD&D modules of all time.

Tracy and Laura Hickman of DragonLance fame authored this fantastic module. This module introduced gothic horror to the Dungeons and Dragons game and formed the basis for the entire Ravenloft campaign setting. The module itself is beautifully rendered. The artwork, maps, and accessories are all first rate. The Hickmans bring the villain Strahd to life and make him much more than just a blood-sucking vampire. His motivations are well thought out and quite plausible. Although, I do not play in the Ravenloft campaign setting very often, this module will always have a special place in my heart. And remember. The mists of Ravenloft know no bounds. You just might end up invited to the House of Strahd as a dinner guest!

The original that started it all...

This module is the stand alone adventure that introduced Strahd Von Zarovich and the land of Barovia that eventually grew to be the entire Ravenloft campaign setting. Even if we disregard what came later, this adventure is astoundingly good. The maps are incredible, the emphasis on character interaction rather than hack-n-slash fighting is apreciated, and the use of cards to randomly determine key elements of the plot insures that the story will be different every time you run it. Even 2 decades after it was published this one has held up surprisingly well and compares favorably to the modules that are currently out today.

Toward a More English English

The topic of this book is the distinction between words that are truly English, in the sense that they come from Old English or at least from Germanic languages, and words borrowed or derived from other languages, especially Latin and Greek. The book is intended mainly as a reference for people who would like to increase the proportion of true English in their writing and/or speech; secondarily it will be of interest to those who are interested in the history of our language and where our modern vocabulary comes from. The text per se is only some 30 pages; the bulk of the volume consists of two word lists. The first is a list of true English words, with definitions and alternatives. The second is a list of commonly used words derived from Latin and other foreign languages, with true English equivalents provided. The text itself is written in the style the author promotes -- i.e., using predominantly true English. There are occasional awkwardnesses, but for the most part it is a good example of writing with a minimum of erudite borrowings. What I wish the author had included is more etymology: for the true English words, the Old English or cognate other Germanic word from which it comes; for the "Anglo-Latin" words, at least a hint as to the original Latin or whatever.

This book sets side by side words that are truly English, meaning that they come from Old English or at least from Germanic tongues, and words borrowed or put together from other tongues, above all Latin and Greek. The book is meant mainly as a tool for those who would like to bring more true English into their writing and/or speech; it will also be helpful to those who are keen on the tale of our speech and where our latter-day words come from. The tale of how English has come to be as it is, and thoughts as to which words are best for what we want to say, takes only some 30 pages; the bulk of the book is made of two word lists. The first is a list of true English words, with meanings and other word choices with like meanings. The other is a list of everyday words that have been made from Latin and other tongues, with true English words of like meanings given. The book itself is written in the way the writer wants to foster -- that is, in the main with true English words. There are a few unwieldy bits, but for the most it is a good way of making one see how to write with few overly learned borrowings. What I wish the writer had given is more about the forerunners of the words: for the true English words, the Old English or other Germanic word from which it comes; for the "Anglo-Latin" words, at least a hint as to the Latin or whatever forerunner.

Excess of Words, not very helpful

I'm not so sure this book will be a great help, especially after I saw the entry "tsunami - ground swell, sea-wave" under Anglo-Latin to English use of words. The first 40 pages are a rehash of the evolution of the English language. This is of doubtful use. Another random selection: silvery: silver-hued, silver-toned; ready-made: ready-to-wear, off-the-rack. Do you really gain anything from these examples or are they a lie: less than the truth, untruth, downright lie, shameless lie, white lie, unsooth"? I don't think this will be a useful [handy, good for, helpful, of help, in play, ready, up and doing, working] volume. Any good thesaurus would be more useful.
