Handy and Useful for Basic Navigation and Getting Around

Because this map covers a huge area its scale is necessarily large. It will give you an overall view of the Peninsula and enough detail to select your routes. Want to take the spur highway to Kenai? This map will make it perfectly clear where the spur intersects with 1 and what to look for before the turn. But don't confuse this with topo trail maps; not enough detail to launch yourself into the unknown.

That said, when you spread this out you get the entire Peninsula. How does Hope fit into your plan to drive from Whittier to Seward? Can you get off 1 and drive along Kalifornsky Beach Road? Just how massive is this Park I'm driving through?

I like Google for really magnified and close-in views. But no web site or app can give you the big picture in any sort of detail. This old school map - its waterproof, it folds, it fits in your glove compartment, you can spread it out on your kitchen table - gives you the big picture when you need it.

The detailed maps of Homer, Seward and Kenai/Soldotna are very helpful and will help you when you get to those places. These three detailed maps do have a lot of info, (markets, gas, shops), that its nice to have at your fingertips.

All of the other stuff - lists of parks and campgrounds and canoeing sites and fishing sites and so on - probably won't be really helpful once you start your trip. They do seem helpful, though, for trip planning because they offer lots of suggestions for further internet research. (48 hikes are described; that will keep your web browser busy.)

So, this is good value, has lots of factoids, gives you the big picture even if the print is tiny, and puts the Peninsula in perspective. That's fine; anyway, they had me at WATERPROOF.

Great map for Kenai penninsula

We just returned from a ten-day trip to Seward and Homer. This map gave us a good overview of the areas we drove through, and lots of info on recreation, wildlife viewing, trails, and more. Best overview map we found of the area.

About the Author

Alexander "Sandy" Antunes (born 1967 in Baltimore, Maryland) is a Maryland-area astronomer, author, and role playing game designer. He graduated from Boston University in 1989 with a dual major in astronomy and physics, received a Masters in astronomy from Penn State in 1992, and received his PhD in computational astrophysics from George Mason University in 2005. He was the Maryland Science Center "Science Person of the Month" for May 2007.

The book is stuffed with photos which are near useless without the discussed colors

The book's contents are superb however all of the text and captions that discuss the different wavelengths and meanings of the various color gradations in the books photos are unfortunately ALL printed in black and white! The book is stuffed with photos which are near useless without the discussed colors; sad to see because otherwise I would have given it a 4 or 5. I can't believe the other reviewers didn't mention this obvious flaw... makes me wonder if they are real or not...

Great starting material

Antunes does an excellent job of distilling a broad and complex area into key elements suitable for the hobbyist wanting to commence their exploration of remote sensing for a micro-sat platform. I'm planning on reading through again, and I'd certainly recommend this title (together with it's other volumes) as a worthy read for all those keen on the nascent hobbyist space field.

Necessary. This book and the others he wrote follow an interesting and very necessary trend. When you consider that sending things into space started off as a DIY trend in its entirety we are in good stead.

Save your money!

If you already own/read The 100, save your money and skip this. I was excited that this was a whole new program, but to me it's just a rewritten The 100. Other than a couple of updates to the "free" foods and some rewritten daily meal plans, at the end of the day, it's The 100. I recently purchased the updated The 100 (from 2015) and 2 months later, I feel as if I have basically bought the same book. This is the last Jorge Cruise book I will buy...I'm tired of shelling out money for basically the same thing with a few minor changes.

Nothing New Here/

Nothing new if you have read his recent books. . The affirmations are like the ones you get on any inspirational calendar, ranging from Helen Keller to Tony Robbins. Some recipes are together and some are in the daily sections. The recipes all look delicious but why can't they all be together, along with the affirmations? The formatting is like his other books, terrible and all over the map. I don't like that he does not give portion sizes on the freebie list or nutrition info for the recipes. Eating till satisfied , is often hard for people who are overweight to be able to gauge . I have read his other books and have had that same complaint. I naïvely thought this book would be different, since, who would have the nerve to just write a re-hash of other books, throw in some lame affirmations and market it as something groundbreaking and new? If you want an intelligent read about the effects of stress on weight loss, get the Haley Pomroy books, The Burn and The Fast Metabolism Diet. You may not want to follow the plans but you can at least get knowledge regarding stress/cortisol etc. and how everything comes into play. Too many recommended supplements and his brand of protein powder sounds like the JJ Virgin non vegan protein powder. Also, so many colors and fonts and glossy paper in this and his other recent books, I guess to detract from the lack of content. I'm not a child, I can read a book without colored glossy pages and different fonts. Check it out from the library before you buy it. I wish I would have.

Walton Ford grew up in Westchester County, New York, in a family of gifted storytellers. As a child he was an amateur naturalist--collecting animals, hiking, fishing, and devoting much of his free time to examining and drawing the dioramas and specimens at the American Museum of Natural History in New York City. He completed his studies in filmmaking at the Rhode Island School of Design in 1982, but soon adapted his talent for storytelling to painting. His life-size watercolors, which at first glance appear to be in the vein of 19th-century natural-history painters like John J. Audubon or Edward Lear, are actually complexly layered fantasies depicting wild animals in unnatural settings and situations, and cite textual sources ranging from the letters of Benjamin Franklin to the journals of Leonardo da Vinci. Ford lived in New York City for most of the 1980s and '90s--home base for personally and professional influential travels to countries including Italy, India, and Mexico--and for some years supported himself as a wood refinisher, carpenter, metalworker, and illustrator, while developing his craft and audience. His work has been exhibited widely since 1987 at private galleries and public institutions including The Whitney Museum, The Brooklyn Museum, the Paul Kasmin Gallery in New York, Michael Cohn Gallery in Los Angeles. He has been awarded a John Simon Guggenheim fellowship and grants from the National Endowment for the Arts and the New York Foundation for the Arts, among others. He now lives, works, and hikes in the Berkshire Hills of Massachusetts.

Bill Buford was the fiction editor of the New Yorker for eight years, where he first came upon Walton Ford's work to illustrate some of the stories he published. He is now a New Yorker staff writer. He was also the founding editor of Granta and has written two books, Among the Thugs and Heat: An Amateur's Adventures as a Kitchen Slave, Line Cook, Pasta Maker, and Apprentice to a Dante-Quoting Butcher in Tuscany. He lives in New York City with his wife Jessica Green, and their two sons.

The 2009 Art Book of the Year

This book at 15 inches tall is packed full of reproductions of panoramic wildlife paintings by Walton Ford. Ford is what you might loosely call a naturalist - a painter of nature with an old fashioned sense of fidelity to the anatomical proportions and whiskered details of God's creations. On top of that he is a fantasy artist who flings his animal subjects into crazy social situations of mischief, conflict and comic chaos. While some of the scenes he paints involve implausible situations, he gives the animals a credible sense of character. Vengeance, humour, calculation - these are just a few of the thought processes infused into the faces and the gestures of these animated beasts.

The original artworks reproduced in this book are monstrous large, with many of the animals (alligators, great apes, tigers etcetera) at least as large as life. Prize of the herd in this book may be the multi-panel painting of a male elephant on heat, titled Nila. At 3.66 metres tall x 5.49 wide, the original artwork is quite literally the size of a young elephant. Playing upon the intimidating size and power of many of these wild animals, Ford often paints them in situations of victory over man. A painting dated 1596 shows a lumbering polar bear triumphant over the bones and personal effects of an explorer, while in the background a shattered sailing ship creaks against an arctic shore.

Also unusual is that these works are all watercolours, painted onto huge sheets of paper. Watercolour normally lends itself to modest, even miniature work, because of the difficulty of handling the medium across large surfaces without washes drying in inconvenient places. Furthermore watercolour on paper is unforgiving when mistakes are made and the consequences of the risks are greater when the painting is on a gigantic scale. Ford works skilfully in the medium making heavy use of the "dry brush" technique - a method that avoids bleeding, helps keep brush lines precise and allows the overlay of variegated colour (for instance to paint a mass of silky fur).

To admire the original massive works, which can cover whole gallery walls, viewers would need to stand several metres back. Ford aides the viewer with some sharp linework, a technique has a secondary benefit of allowing the works to reproduce wonderfully well in book format. Pancha Tantra includes a nice mix of cropped close-ups bled to the edge of the page - allowing us to study the overlay of wash and brushstrokes, with long shots of whole works - at a size where we can still appreciate the fine detail. On my count this book displays 72 artworks on single pages and a further 41 spread across double pages. In addition there are 43 pages with crops of interesting details, plus 17 double pages devoted to cropped highlights. Some artworks have several pages devoted to them, including the wide shot and multiple close-ups.

The background washes on Ford's paintings include mock mould spotting and branching mildew, to make the paintings look ambiguously like nineteenth century prints. At first glimpse the effect is deceptive. But these artworks are far more lively than conventional stiff animal portraits. And the wit and allegory packed into some of the works can make the viewer do a double-take. While these images are show beautiful beasts and colourful fauna, the situations depicted include some moments of drama and visceral brutality.

The only disappointment to this book is the absence of any chapter on Ford's working methods or career story. There is only a two page basic `Biography' that includes a chronology of exhibitions, awards and references to previous media stories on the artist. Perhaps the Collector's Edition with its additional 34 pages has a more rounded biographical treatment? Maybe I'll have to save for it and find out!

This book provides a marvellous folio of artworks to the mass market and does this at an agreeable price. Many of the main competitors to Taschen would have charged at least twice this price for a book this scale. The post-release price won't last and shouldn't last, it is too good to be true for a book of this size and quality. This is an abridged version of my full review on Art Book News at blogspot.

What a buy!

I'm a huge fan of Ford's work, and I've been trying to get some printed resources for a year. All the calendars and previous boooks are out of print or too expensive, so when this edition became available at this price I almost went nuts.

And this beautiful book does not disappoint. The color plates are gorgeous, the wonderful pages showing details are crisp, and the superb text by Bill Buford is illumnating. I am ecstatic about this purchase. One of the best deals I have ever had on Amazon.com.

Big book, nice reproductions, great price

I was expecting a great book but this exceeded my expectations. It is large, with a great cover, and nicely reproduced illustrations inside. My only complaint is that the large paintings are placed in spreads with the gutter dividing the image in half. It would have been better to have gate folds so the entire painting could be viewed on one page. But that is probably too much to expect for a book of this price. On the positive side, the book is not bound overly tight so the spreads do open so you get a good view of the work (books bound too tightly obscure imagery in the gutter).

In addition to Ford's paintings there are quite a few of his prints, which I had never seen before. They are remarkably similar to Audubon prints (with a bizarre twist, of course). There are excellent close-ups of nearly every image and the collection seems like a nice overview of Ford's work. I haven't read the text yet but plan to do so soon, but suffice it so say that the text doesn't overwhelm the visuals.

In short, it is a great book at a great price.

“They say you should dream like you’ll live forever, and live like you’ll die tomorrow.”

If you read When It Rains, you’ll understand why I was very nervous going into this book. VERY nervous. When It Rains was one of the most tear spilling books I’ve ever read. But thankfully this one wasn’t like that. I doubt my heart could take any more. Lisa said that this one was, “the creme in the oreo…it’s the sweet spot before you get to the other chocolate cookie(Living With Regret).” Good for this one, bad for the next. But we have time to prepare. While this is the second in the series, it can be a standalone.

Emery had her whole life mapped out. She knew what she wanted to be and she knew how to get it. So she wasn’t in the mood to deal with a super cocky football player, no matter what he looks like. He may be her partner in class, but that’s all. She has no time for distractions.

Drake Chambers, was a super hot jock, that everyone though had life in the palm of his hand. He seemed to work hard and play harder. But no one know what’s really happening with him. His life isn’t nearly as perfect as everyone thinks. So when he’s paired up with a cute girl from speech, he finds himself trying to distance himself from her. He has no time for distractions.

But soon life seems to push these two together and they can’t seem to stop the momentum, no matter how hard they try.

He’s nitrate, and I’m acid. We’re testing the limits, waiting for the explosion, but neither of us can stop.

But eventually it all comes crashing down and them and this is where the angst comes in. And I do mean ANGST! A plot twist that gutted me. And of course, the groveling wasn’t nearly enough, in my eyes. But I just had to hold on and hope these two get it straightened out. Even if I wanted to reach in and smack them both upside their heads. But nooooo, we had to suffer right along with them.

“There are two versions of forever: the one I dreamed of every day as a kid, and the one I made my own after the old dreams faded away. The old dreams weren’t meant to be, but this one is. You’re my forever. I just had to take a few wrong turns to find you, and now that I have, I never want to live with out you.”

The story continues...

After I read, When it Rains, I became a Lisa De Jong fan. That book was so emotional and the storyline was unique and fabulous, but what really made me a fan was her writing. Lisa can write, period. She is able to string words together in such a beautiful way that I am able to lose myself in her story. Needless to say, I have been dying to read this book, and it didn't disappoint.

Emery and Drake's story is heartbreakingly beautiful. They will crawl their way into your heart and take you on an emotional rollercoaster ride. You will feel every feel and you will definitely shed a tear. I'm not a crier. I hate crying, and it takes a lot to bring that sort of emotion out of me. But Lisa did it. Again. She is two for two.

This book is flawless, and I cannot say enough about it. There's even a little taste of When It Rains that literally took my breath away. I wont post it in my review, because I don't want to spoil the moment for anyone. But once I came to it, I read it again and again.

So add it to your TBR and the moment it is available to the masses you need to read it. It will change you forever.

Too much indecision from Drake. It was a push n pull relationship. Perfect people can be imperfect people.

Story begins with Emery wanting to get away from the small town life she grew up in.
Emery finally gets out of the small town when she decides to go away to college. On her first day on campus she decides to go scouting and bumps into a gorgeous guy. Already she is acting insecure about her appearance when she takes in his six pack abs. She jumps to conclusions about him without knowing anything about him. She already has him labeled "a player". Emery quickly dismisses him without giving him her name. She plans on avoiding guys. She does not want to get close to anyone.

The stories told from both Drakes and Emerys POV.
The banter between them is funny and interesting.

All the talk about classes, football, clothes, and the weather is getting boring. Drakes character is arrogant, confident, and demanding. Drake has a lot of responsibility placed on his shoulders. Emery places a lot of pressure on herself to study and get good grades.

The progression between Drake and Emery is becoming frustrating. It's too slow. I'm tired of Drake pulling away and drawing her in. Drake needs to confront his issues and let his guard down.

"She's so controlled and I'm crumbling a little more every time I'm with her", this is an amazing quote from the story.

Lisa writes beautiful stories. This one is well written. She writes some past references about Drake and Emery which help you understand why they push away from people.

"I'm not trying to be someone I'm not or anyone someone else wants me to be", I like this comment from the story. It speaks volumes about the kind of pressure Drake has had to endure.
"We aim to be something we never have", this is a great statement because it shows how both their parents had a huge impact on the way there lives turned out. Our parents mold their children's future whether they are present or not and it's what you do with that information that molds each one of us.

I got chills when Emery finally tells Drake the truth at the carnival.
Where is Beau when you need him? Drake is going to need his advice again.
Not a fan of the Ping pong game that Drake plays with Emery. He needs to get his act together.
Should be titled, I'm not perfect"' Drake says this one too many times in the story.
Emery has always had control of her future. Then she met Drake and all that control changed. Emery the smart girl was using her heart instead of her brain and that changed her future. Some mistakes are good mistakes and learning to adapt to those changes is better than building walls to keep you in your controlled environment. Their future plans changed when they met each other and that's ok because they are happy with the new future choices.

How could everything go sideways so quickly? Roy knew that eventually the savagery would begin between humans trying to survive, but he never expected it to happen so quickly. So many need help, but survival means hard choices have to be made. You can't save 'em all!

A fine series to add to ones apocalyptic collection. Chock full of survival recommendations and easy to follow suggestions to fit out for short travel excursions and in home defense or bug out location. Can't wait for the final one of the series...
