About the Author
Mary Hoffman has written over 90 books for children, that range from picture books to novels. Amazing Grace, first published in 1991, was commended for the Kate Greenaway Medal and has since become a modern classic. Together with its sequels, Grace and Family and Princess Grace, and the storybooks Starring Grace, Encore Grace and Bravo, Grace, it has sold around 1.5 million copies. Mary has also written the hugely successful Great Big Book of Families, illustrated by Ros Asquith, which is now in 15 editions worldwide. Her other books for Frances Lincoln include The Colour of Home, Kings and Queens of the Bible and An Angel Just Like Me. What you see is not what you get :(

Amazing Grace is a great story for young girls; however the picture of this version of the product is misleading. I thought i was buying the actual fully illustrated, colorful children's book version but instead i got a very small black and white non-illustrated copy of the play that cannot be used to read to children. Putting a picture of the awesome children's book version is deceptive and i want to return this virtually useless copy that i have. If you want to buy this book to read to kids make sure you read the product description carefully so that you are not mislead to buy this version.

Amazing Grace

This was definitely not the edition I thought I was ordering.
The item was described only as a paperback edition of the classic Amazing Grace.
This edition turned out to be a play.
The cover was b&w ,not in color as pictured, and there were no pictures in the book.
Very disappointed.

Very interesting and informational

I purchased this book for my Communicable Disease Control course while in college. I was fortunate enough to find a buyer who was selling it at a lower price than other people. The book is a great buy, full of information and pictures. There is background on a lot of different diseases, where they originated from, what the symptoms are, how to treat them (if you can), and of course pictures of what the disease does. My boyfriend has never been interested in reading textbooks, but because he saw the pictures, he can't put it down and now he wants to show everyone (yes even his boss). This is definitely worth it if you want to learn about Chaagas, Westnile, plagues, yellow fever, clostridium, viruses, bacteria, helminths, prions, sexually transmitted diseases, vertically and horizontally transmitted diseases and like I said, even the pictures can teach you a thing or two.

A Lily in the Clay...

Hi I got this book from Story Cartel in exchange for an honest review. I really appreciate the opportunity to do what I do though I apologise if this is a bit late. So here goes…..
Good
To the author thank you for writing this book. It’s because of books like this that I read, if you ever print it, please let me know immediately, I’d be more than happy to buy it. I found this book had a gripping way of portraying and conveying deep and even painful ideas. Very effective at changing perspective on the world.
The author was good at portraying darkness and evil in the world without relishing in it. It showed just enough to make one realise there is pain beyond imagination without violating the reader.
The book made good use of magical realism. Just enough to get points across but not too much to alienate the reader from the characters which is very important. Makes the story feel closer to a memoir with subjective perspective playing a natural role.
The main character’s constant directness is at first a little irritating. As the book goes along the objectivity becomes endearing though and ultimately invaluable in helping the reader connect with the characters. Truth is key.
The story has wrenching twists to it, not just in plot but in how well it portrays the characters’ relations. It connects well enough with the reader for these situations to be thought provoking. It’s also very good at stepping beyond the fourth wall from the making one ask questions about how we value life.

Bad
- Although it’s not really a fault to the story line there is a philosophical contention in the story. Whilst the characters clearly saw depravity around them they were to some level just as depraved. I mean Lily shot men in cold blood out of sheer anger. Mike killed our of precaution at times with seemingly no remorse. As humans they were flawed. It may just be a thought but perhaps being human isn’t to be good. Perhaps to be human is to be flawed.

Overall
Once again thank you to the author for writing this. It had a profound effect on me. The character’s appreciation of the small things we take for granted spoke deeply to me. This tells a story of average but sincere hope in what should otherwise be a desperate world. Nevertheless the story is extremely realistic about our flaws as people and as a world. I’ve made it a point to read this book at least once a year. Personally all I can say is, to Clay and Lily, I won’t forget your story and what you had to say.

Highly Recommend, especially to 17-25 year olds

Dystopian novels are not normally a genre that I read, but I read The Last Human based on a friend's suggestion, and I am glad I did because I enjoyed it a lot more than I thought I would. The story is written almost in the guise of a memoir, with the narrator providing an introduction and explanation of the status of the world, followed by a flashback reflection of the narrator’s experience during the world’s demise, concluded by the narrator providing a warning to future civilizations to learn from and not repeat our mistakes. The narrator’s flashback reflection primarily deals with the struggle to survive, and the struggle to find purpose worth surviving for, in a seemingly not so distant future America that has quickly fallen from the America as we know it. I particularly liked that there was a fairly high plausibility of way the world as we know it met its demise. We travel with Clay, the main character/narrator, as he faces abduction by shadowy military members, lab-rat type treatment at a government testing facility, multiple escapes and pursuits, struggles to survive in the aftermath of devastation, and the struggle to connect to other humans. The story moves quickly for the most part, and I had no trouble connecting to Clay or the other characters he meets along the way, so by the middle/end it was definitely difficult to put down. There is a twist towards the end that I did not see coming but thought worked well.

As far as the writing goes, this is not classic literature, but I don’t believe it is intended to be; so readers should not pick up this book expecting Shakespeare or Dickens. The book is intended for a young adult audience, and it is written in a manner that is tailored to that audience and that I think meets its target. As ~30 year old male, I had no trouble picturing my 18 year old self right next to Clay on his journey.There are a lot of colloquialisms, and a lot of the dialogue (both spoken and the narrator’s thoughts) is written using phonetic spelling so that the characters’ language and slang really seems to come alive. The author is definitely talented and surprisingly manages to interweave some humor amongst the darkness that persists throughout. There is a lot of content that may be considered explicit (violence, language, alcohol use, sexual encounters), but that is part of what makes the story seem so real. I’m not sure the story explicitly gives Clay’s age, but I get the impression he has recently finished high school and is likely ~18 years old. When I think back to when I was 18, the language is nothing that I did not use or hear regularly, and the sex and drinking weren’t things I didn’t do or at least think about doing, so the ‘explicit’ content does not seem out of place or excessive. It is one of the things that added to the plausible feel that was so key to my enjoyment of the story.

The one thing that really holds this story back for me is that it seems to be poorly edited and a bit rushed. There are numerous typos that seem to be the type of thing that spell checker won’t pick up because they are actual words, but not used correctly (e.g. hear/ear, ‘til/till, ‘cause/cause, etc). I purchased a paperback copy, and it did not have page numbers. While I enjoyed the book way more than I expected to, these rough edges made me wonder how much better it might have been if the author had found a more skilled editor to really polish it up. With that missing polish this would have been a 5 star for me, but since it is missing and I can’t give partial stars, I give the Last Human a 4/5 rating.

Good prose, needs more of a story

The Last Human was a decent read, but I feel it wasn't really ready for publication. It could have used a(nother) pass through an editor/proofreader. There was a lot of missing punctuation (especially periods), as well as enough typos to make me take notice, like compound words that should have been hyphenated but were written as two separate words instead.

The writing itself was pretty good. It really takes you pretty deep into the mind of the character. There were times where it could have been more realistic, and I don't mean the story itself, but the character's behavior. For instance, in Chapter 2, Clay is remembering a conversation he had with his parents before they were taken. They had been talking about government control and power, and Clay asks, "What about religion?" completely out of the blue. Then he asks about corporations. When parents are discussing an oppressive government, no 14 year old is going to ask these questions. It felt contrived and preachy. The author just wanted to get these views to the reader.

The story moved along, but at the same time, didn't really go anywhere. The characters were just kind of traveling from one place to the next in the general direction of east. It was hard to root for someone who didn't really want anything. The ending was the same. Satisfactory in that it didn't piss me off, but didn't blow my mind either.

I enjoyed the prose and some of the humor. I just wish there had been more of a story here.

About the Author
We have managed to find the ideal author for this new book, Chris Gibbs, a 42-year-old semiretired web designer and vice secretary, newsletter editor and technical adviser of the Locost Car Club. He has impeccable credentials for the job in hand, as he built his own Locost between 1997 and 1999 and has access to a tremendous database of Locost information through the Locost Car Club, which he currently runs in his spare time. He is currently working on a self-designed single-seater track-day car in the style of a 1960s F1 car, with Sierra running gear and a Honda Fireblade motorcycle engine.

Best DIY Car Instruction Book So Far

Chris Gibbs has taken the 'Locost' concept a step further. As this new book has CAD drawings (I believe done on Solidworks), it probably does not have any dimension errors that crept into the Ron Champion book. The book takes you through drawings and instructions so you can end up with a Ford Sierra (Merkur) based roadster. All you need are tools, patience, time, money and a lot of hard work. The single donor vehicle concept helps but only if the abovementioned vehicle is available (and affordable!) in your country. However, with some ingenuity and help from other builders online, you may be able to come up with something good. If you have questions there's even an official Haynes Roadster Forum to help you! Author Chris Gibbs participates in this official Haynes forum and posts updates to the book, corrections (yes even this book needs a few), advice and guidance.

Ron champion still the champion

I own all the previous editions of this book. This has been the least usefull unless you really do have the donor car used in it. I recommend the Ron champion book instead because it gives more latitude to adapt many old cars instead of one single rear suspension from a European ford. If this will be the first book of this type that you will purchase then I would recommend it. Those with experience and access to the internet would be better off with Ron champions book.

NOT the new locost reference

I was really expecting this book to bring a much needed update on Ron Champion's book but it's more of the same. The donor is still UK only and even there, it's getting hard to find. The drawings have dimensional errors like Champion's book. The design of the chassis is still lacking because it still does not incorporate some triangulations (Aussie mods) that are known to improve rigidity. A lot of the new designs shown in the book are overly complex (the pedal box is a good example). Finally, it still leaves a bunch of details out. I would recommend people to stay with Champion's book for inspiration and complement with Tanner's book or join a forum.

Great book, so many clear photos and complete instructions

I was looking for a book on guitar building, so when I saw this book at the store I was happy (and sort of shocked to find one without ordering online) but expected it to be maybe a bit cursory or shallow - I was wrong! It's a great book, very complete, the pictures are bright, clear and in color. I read (and lost) Hiscock's popular guitar-making book years ago and it's good, but I don't recall the pictures being anywhere as clear and helpful as in this. This is just a great book that covers every facet of building a solidbody that you could think of. It doesn't cover acoustics or semi-hollw guitars to which I say GOOD, there's no point in covering too many subjects and not doing justice to them.

Very well written book, and there have been no parts so far where I've been like "huh? What does that mean?" or where he's left out any important info or anything.

Oh, and as the title says, it comes with full-sized plans for a Stratocaster-type guitar, I mean, what a bonus! For the price this is selling for on Amazon, you can't even buy plans online (I know, I've looked and tried haha). I have only opened and looked at the plans briefly but they look very thorough and clear. They're not the reason I got the book though, but they're a nice bonus.

I really predict this book to become a very popular (I feel silly using the word CLASSIC, plus I'd have to re-read the one mentioned above to be sure that this was as much better as I think) title for guitar builders as people discover it.

I feel like a cheerleader, but if you're getting any books on guitar construction, grab this. Even if you never get around to making one (like I never did after reading books like this years ago), it's worth it for the insight into how a solidbody electric guitar works, you get a lot of good ideas that come in handy when you need to do setups and whatnot. Man, I severely love this book, probably my best purchase of the year so far (by the way I have no knowledge of the authour or anything, I'm not a shill, just super enthused over this book).

Decent book

Very good book. Decent explanation of the components of an electric guitar.

Some of the woodworking is beyond beginner level.

Decent level of photos throughout, to illustrate things.

Does come with plans for a guitar also.

Decent section on how to set the proper intonation on an electric guitar also, and setting bridge adjustments and truss rod adjustments... so, even if you have no intention of building a guitar, this book has some good info on "setting up" an existing guitar.

I liked the book. If you were going to do what he says, with the proper materials, this wouldn't be a cheap guitar you end up with. However, it would be a premium quality guitar at a fraction of the "big name" price... So, if you're just looking for a cheap guitar, there are any number of places to go buy a cheap guitar.

If you want to build a guitar that is equal to or greater than a Fender or Gibson, this book will tell you how.

Best Solid Body Guitar book

This is a great Solid Body Guitar building book. Martin Oakham has hit the mark and is a great text for building the electric guitar. From wood selection to completion, though could have more on finishing, this book is first class. To compliment this book I would get Tom Hirst's Electric Guitar Construction book.

Wayne McDill is Professor of Preaching at Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary and has nearly twenty years of experience in teaching students that art of preaching. He has his Th.D. degree from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary and is active in the Academy of Homiletics and Evangelical Theological Society. McDill has authored four books including the 1994 B&H release The Twelve Essential Skills of Great Preaching. He lives in Wake Forest, North Carolina.

This is the Best Practical Book on Preaching I've Ever Read!

I have read several books on preaching and this one definitely fits the bill. It's imaginative, philosophical, practical, and invigorating all in the same volume of text. It's not long and wordy but gets right to the point. No matter how long you have been at the preaching desk, there is something in this book that you will find enlightening. For years I have been trying to find a book that "spells out" the practics of sermon preparation and writing. This book does just that. Especially helpful is the Motivated sequence outline, and specifically the analogy and scene/story chapters. Many times preachers during their sermon preparation contract a disease that I call "IMAGINATION BLOCK." You know, that's where you simply cannot come up with that perfect example, illustration, metaphor, or even application that really brings home the point your trying to make. McDill shows you, in a step-by-step way, how to find enlightenment in this area from your own experience. What a refreshing change to the etherial, ambiguous books i've read before where understanding the first two chapters is an exercise in futility. Preachers need down-to-earth counsel on understanding how our people receive and conceptualize the word of God, and the best way to help facillitate that reception. This is what McDill's book describes and proscribes in detailed fashion. This is a must buy for every preacher who is sick and tired of trying to figure out, "Just how do I approach this text, or that Psalm, this epistle, or that retorical prologue?" In short, BUY IT YOU'LL LIKE IT!"

The Best Sermon tool I have ever seen

McDill has captured the essence of expository Preaching. No other preaching method I have studied is as God honoring and powerful. It teaches you how to preach God's Word and not your own or anyone elses. At the same time it helps you to use your own life experiences to illustrate the points you pull directly out of God's Word. It takes the best of Inductive study methods and couples them with the art of expository preaching.
