About the Author
A professional guitar teacher for over 12 years, Joseph Alexander graduated from The Guitar Institute in London with a Diploma in Popular Music Performance. He continued his education at the prestigious Leeds College of Music achieving a BA (Hons) in Jazz Studies in 2002. Immediately following his graduation Joseph was awarded a bursary and internship writing music for the West Yorkshire Playhouse where he composed scores for three individual works. Music has taken Joseph all over the world. He has performed on little islands in Thailand and 100,000 ton ocean liners in the Caribbean. He currently lives in Poynton, England and is busy teaching a new wave of upcoming guitarists. He has often worked as a peripatetic teacher in Cheshire schools and at times has over 40 weekly private students.

An easy to understand book on Drop 2 chord voicings

This is the second book I have gotten from this author and I have to say he is an excellent writer. I am one of those people who really struggles to understand some of the basic theory behind jazz but he makes it simple and the examples he picks are just excellent. I'd say this book is pretty accessible. It would work for a keen beginner who has already mastered basic open chords all the way to an intermediate player such as myself who is more familiar with other genres but who has been developing an interest in jazz over time.

I highly recommend buying this if you are just beginning to learn about Jazz chords.

Well orgainized and laid out

This is the third book by Joseph Alexander I've purchased. So far, all of them have delivered, including this one. As with all his books, they start out with the basics, but soon move on to more advanced topics. This book provides a series of lessons, each starting the student off with various exercises. From here, you'll have to transpose them to all 12 weeks and do it in you head. At first, this can be a bit of a challenge; however, if you're ever going to ascend to next level as a musician and guitarist, this is a 'must-have' skill. Hope Mr. Alexander writes more books!

Like having a very good teacher on your Kindle.

The author's rock solid grasp of the theory of music, has really helped me to build my playing on solid ground, yet while the words 'theory' and 'dull' normally sit together, it doesn't apply here! It's hands-on, musical and fun.

I've bought a number of his books, and the variation in book themes (jazz, blues or technique) helps my practice sessions to remain varied, and therefore more interesting, the result being that I put in more playing hours.

I now pick up the guitar with much more enthusiasm than when I was just collecting licks, as I'm able to fit everything into the right place musically and transpose it when required. Each book is peppered with great advice and reminders on the right approach to take, when practicing so, the increased playing hours are more productive too!

Basically, they've given a lot more fuel to my lifelong passion for the guitar, and I'm very glad that I found them.

Naughty can be real Nice!!!

This book was than naughty, it was HOT!!!!! Nicole Edwards sure does know how to put a book out that will make you lose sleep!!! I could not put my kindle down!!! I am a big fan of hers and she has yet to disappoint. So much love, devotion, and passion was put into this book, it is going to be hard for her to top this book. I have no fear that she will!!! It was good to visit with some of my favorite families she has written about and I am looking forward to reading more from all of her series. I also enjoyed how in one of the stories in this collection, she had several cameo appearances from characters from different series!! This book is a great read!! Thank you Nicole Edwards and please don't stop. You are a treasure!!!

Just as amazing as I hoped it would be!

Because Naughty Holidays Can Be Oh So Nice 2015 is a treat for all Nicole Edwards fans! In this holiday special we get three short novellas featuring characters from three different series by this author. In July 2015 Ms. Edwards had readers vote regarding who they would like to see in a holiday novella and she picked the top three. If you know anything about this author you know that she tends to write about copious amounts of sexual variations (MF/MFM/MM, etc.) and you also know that her books are HOT AS **** as we watch each of the characters Ms. Edwards creates succumb to passion and love. I am certainly a huge fan and getting to revisit some of my favorite characters who have blissfully settled into their happy forever made this read such a holiday treat! This book had me gleefully jumping for joy and it turned out to be just as amazing as I was hoping it would be.

Nicole Edwards provides her reader with a plethora of emotional and sizzling hot moments in three separate novellas – one focusing on Travis, Gage and Kylie from Alluring Indulgence, another on RT and Z from Sniper 1 Security and with the final one being about Luke, Cole and Sierra from Club Destiny. Each novella takes place during the holiday season and were definitely a lot of fun to read with some laugh-out-loud scenes and some beautifully tender moments between the characters who are featured. And, as we have all come to expect from this author, we get some nuclear hot and kinky times that will leave you panting. Seriously, Nicole Edwards knows how to write erotica. Damn! We also get some special family time and it was awesome to see the Walker clan happily co-existing and getting into all sorts of trouble. It was also nice to catch up with the Sniper 1 family and the Club Destiny family.

I truly loved this book and it was such a treat. Because Naughty Holidays Can Be Oh So Nice 2015 was simply a wonderful holiday read that had me smiling enthusiastically and definitely had me seeking out my fan in the middle of winter. Say what? Yes, as I have explained, Nicole Edwards....hot scenes....panting.....um....you get the picture. I should note that I live in Canada and it is COLD here so the fact that I got a little….er…heated….. Well, you get the picture. I simply can’t get enough of anything and everything written by this author and am always anxiously awaiting her next book release.

Read this book if you are a fan of Nicole Edwards. I loved it!

Great adventure story by Mr. Scoville

My grandmother purchased the entire series by Mr. Scoville for my father (born in 1915). I loved reading the entire series as a girl, 8-9 (1949-50) year old. I still have some of the books. Glad "Boy Scouts in the Wilderness" is now on Kindle.

While I can agree that some of the tabbing AMSCO does is incorrect, I must also state that the lyrics are most of the time wrong, too. While some songs contain a few substituted words, some are VERY wrong and very humerous when you know the real lyrics.

Case in point AC/DC's "Snowballed."

Here are the actual lyrics from the 1982 "For Those About to Rock" chord book:

1. Crashed out of the market,
Out on the floor, washed up on the shore.
Bombed out of the city,
Out of the door, blown up against the wall.

2. Put out of the picture,
Axe about to fall, walk before you crawl.
Dragged down to the bottom screaming for air,
The shark must get his share.

Now, these are the first two verses as written by AMSCO in this particular book:

1. Pushed down on the mountain,
Colder than hell, busted on the shelf.
Workin' on the scenery,
Tired of the view, Thrown up `gainst the wall.

Put out of the picture,
Rocks about to fall, walk before you fall.
Land into the gutter,
Screaming for air, you should have stayed inside.

As you can see laughable wrong! There are, what, THREE words correct in the first verse? At least the second verse has a few more correct words.

Is it that hard for AMSCO to do proper research on the lyrics?
As for the music, I haven't gone through all of it, but I am at least learning how to play the songs, correct or not. They do sound pretty good to me, however. There are some unusually hard fingerings in AMSCO's tabs (see "The Jack" from High Voltage) that are tough for a 6 foot 2 man with decent sized hands, so I know they would be impossible for a particular 5 foot 3 Australian guitar player we all know.

Back to the lyric issue, the funny thing is, I have earlier AC/DC books published by AMSCO that have the lyrics correct. So what happened here?

Beware of Incorect tabbing!

Beware when purchasing any AMSCO books that tab AC/DC.... some are correct, but alot, infact TOO MANY are tabbed incorectly... i dont just mean there in wrong positions... i mean they havent even tabbed the same song... this particuler book dosent have too many mistakes, but beware that a couple of songs are not 100% correct. But this is about the only book that comes close by AMSCO. Avoid any other AMSCO titles for AC/DC!

Excellent, Exciting, Couldn't put it down!

Although I have an extensive library of Datsun Z Car related books in hard cover and paper back, I found this book extremely enjoyable. Even though, Brian Long is a British writer, often if not permanently living in Japan, he provides a worldwide perspective that is often missing in most books about the Datsun Z Car. He seems a master at uncovering facts in the history of the Datsun and the Z Car previously known to only a very few Datsun insiders. Within its cover, there are great pictorial representations of Datsun cars, many not seen often. It is an excellent write up about the Datsun car history, the early Datsun Z car as it progressed to the touring GT becoming the 280ZX and first generation 300ZX ('84-'89), to the Super Car it became in the 1990's with the 300ZX Twin Turbo. The author outlines the racing efforts of some well known drivers with some great photos. Some advertising photos of the period are also captured within the pages of this marvelous book. I have had and continue to have a love affair with the Datsun Z Car, as I have owned over 200 of the early 240Z's, but Brian Long's Book on the 280ZX to the 300ZX, gave me a greater appreciation for the car and the history behind it. It was thoroughly enjoyable reading, and a welcome addition to my collection of Datsun Z Car books. I couldn't stop reading it to the end. Whenever possible I spend some time reviewing the chapters on racing and design work history, over and over again. I never get tired of it. This book and his companion book entitled, 'Datsun Z, From Fairlady to 280Z', are probably the only two Datsun Z Car books a person really needs, although there are several other good ones. But it is of course, nice to own them all.

Datsun 280ZX, Nissan 300ZX

This book is a "must have" for enthusiasts of the legendary Datsun / Nissan Z-car. Brian Long does a good job describing the continuing story of the original Datsun Z-car, as it evolved from a sportscar into a GT and finally into a supercar. The book starts with a recap of the history of Datsun / Nissan and the original 240Z, 260Z, 280Z series, which Long covered in his earlier work - Datsun Z.
As the title suggests, this book picks up on the Z-car story with in-depth coverage of the 280ZX (the second generation Z-car) and both generations of the 300ZX, including the 1990s Twin Turbo supercar which the Z-car finally evolved into. Long also describes the various versions of the 280ZX and 300ZX which Datsun / Nissan sold in different part of the world. This gives the reader a more comprehensive picture and a real global understanding of the Z-car. Long's book is wonderful reading, and the text is supplemented with excellent photographs and illustrations, including pictures of Nissan's original marketing materials for the 280 and 300ZX.
If you are a fan of the Z-car, if you are a member of a Z-club, if you own a Z-car, then this book definitely belongs in your bookcase.

The definitive 280/300ZX guide

This book has pride of place on my bedside table at the moment. Patiently waiting on the real thing (a 1990 Twin Turbo 300ZX to ship from Japan). It's the sort of book that an enthusiast can read and refer to time and time again.

Mine was a second hand copy but virtually new condition. Brian Long does an excellent job on the history of Nissan/Datsun. And for 280ZX and 300ZX owners lots of interesting photos, period advertisements and background info.

Talented writer - Interesting Character Study

In Emily St John' Mandel's latest book: The Lola Quartet, four former high school friends who were part of a jazz group in high school, (The Lola Quartet), find their lives intersect after many years, having reconnected under unusual circumstances. When the novel's protagonist, Gavin Sasaki, a journalist from NYC, is fired from his job in 2009, he moves to Sebastian, Florida, when his sister, Elio, offers him a job in her real estate business. His job is working with clients whose homes will soon be foreclosed upon. While in Florida he sees a photo of a young girl about 10 years of age who looks exactly like his sister when she was about the same age. This girl, Chloe Montgomery, bears the same last name as a girl Gavin dated 10 years earlier who mysteriously disappeared almost overnight. At the time rumor was that Anna Montgomery, had been pregnant.

Gavin becomes obsessed with finding out what happened to Anna, and whether this young girl could possibly be his child. In the hopes of learning more about the past, he tracks down former friends from, The Lola Quartet. He is hoping that at least one of the members, Anna's brother will be able to help him find out more about what happened to Anna.

The story is told through a series of flashbacks blending present with the past over a 10-year period. The author is extremely talented, providing an interesting character study of the former friends. It's a story of dreams not turning out as planned, especially when flawed characters have made bad decisions and choices in life. I loved the pitch perfect descriptions of the Florida landscape. The economic situations experienced by many when the housing crisis reached it's peak were dead on accurate.

Although for me, the novel got off to a slow start, the writing and the surprising conclusion are enough reason to recommend this book as one that many readers will enjoy. I definitely plan to try another book by this author.

Returning to his hometown in Florida to report a story despite his susceptibility to heatstroke, journalist Gavin Sasaki learns from his sister Eileen that a ten-year-old girl, Chloe Montgomery, may be his daughter. Chloe looks like a younger Eileen and has the last name of Gavin's former girlfriend. Gavin hasn't seen Anna Montgomery since she dropped out of high school, when Gavin was in a jazz quartet with Anna's sister, Sasha. Rattled by the discovery and under the gun to produce good stories or perish in the next round of newsroom layoffs, Gavin begins to play roulette with his career by fabricating sources and quotations.

Meanwhile, a third member of Gavin's former jazz combo, Daniel Smith, is in Utah negotiating with a meth dealer to pay a large debt. Daniel is now a Florida cop. The novel's opening scene lets the reader know that the debt is somehow related to Anna, but its exact nature remains a mystery until much of the story has been told. The final member, piano and sax player Jack Baranovsky, is still in Florida, making a contribution to the story as a pill addict who knows more about Anna's situation -- and his own involvement in it -- than he's prepared to tell Gavin.

Why is Anna on the run? Why does everyone but Gavin seem to know that she was pregnant when she left school? Why is her baby turning up in Florida ten years later? How does acclaimed jazz guitarist Liam Deval fit into Anna's plight? These are the absorbing questions that kept me reading. The novel fills in the backstory as it progresses. Eventually the pieces fit together tightly, leaving the reader to worry about the present danger that occupies the last third of the novel.

Unlike many modern stories of suspense, The Lola Quartet doesn't stretch the bounds of credibility with an outlandish plot. Everything that happens seems real, and that credibility heightens the novel's tension. The characters are equally realistic: they gamble, they use drugs, they ignore inconvenient truths, they betray friends. Their well-developed personalities, complete with failings and flaws, add to the story's authenticity.

The novel's fault is that it builds toward a climax that seems anti-climactic. The real action occurs offstage, perhaps because it is too predictable to make it worth describing. A bit of added drama near the end focuses on a character who has played a minor role until that point; it seems oddly out of place. On the other hand, I wouldn't categorize this novel as a traditional thriller. It is more a story of guilty secrets, of relationships that evolved over time, a novel of characters who are overtaken by events they feel powerless to control. Still, the storyline wraps up too neatly. Given the hardships the characters have endured, it is difficult to accept that their lives work out so well by the end of the novel. The characters are not unscarred, their lives do not suddenly become idyllic, but -- despite Gavin's hand-wringing and moralizing at the end -- the characters resolve their problems more easily than I would have expected.

Despite my mild disappointment with the novel's ending, I admired the characterizations and enjoyed Emily St. John Mandel's fluid writing. The Lola Quartet isn't everything it tries to be but it is nonetheless an entertaining, well-written story.

nothing but glory days

There's no going back. Once high school is over, just like Bruce Springsteen says, there's nothing but `glory days,' rehashing what might have been. The Lola Quartet gave their last performance of the year from the back of the truck and that too was when Gavin last saw his wannabe-girlfriend, Anna, as she stood in the outskirts of the woods. He looked for her but she was just gone. Rumors that she was pregnant where supposedly authenticated when his band mate and best friend Daniel disappeared about the same time.
They all moved on but Gavin more than the others. He got the college degree that sent him to New York to work as a high-powered journalist. Addicted to the infamy, he started glamorizing his stories with quotes that he thought his boring subjects could have said ignoring their real world answers, until the inevitable happened and he had to leave, head hung low.
The shame took him home to swampy steamy Florida from where he escaped to avoid the omnipresent heat. His sister found him work with her firm, flipping homes going into foreclosure, and also showed him a photograph she took of a ten-year-old girl, the spitting image of Gavin; no mistaking the Japanese ancestry. Daniel is now a small town cop, Anna's sister Sasha works nights in the town diner, and the last member of the band, Jack is living a drug-addled life in a tent in a friend's back yard. Gavin uses the skills he learned as a top-notch reporter to put together the big picture and track down what appears to be the daughter he never knew about.
The lives the four led since high school took them down paths no one could have imagined, and what Gavin learns shocks and scares him to the core. Be prepared to be surprised.

This book is a guide to the history of literary criticism from antiquity to the present day. It not only provides an overview of the major movements, figures, and texts of literary criticism, but also supplies the cultural, historical, and philosophical background which enables students to see them in context.

The organization of the book is broadly chronological. Starting with a comprehensive section on classical literary criticism, it shows how the central philosophical principles of Plato and Aristotle not only underlie their specific comments on literature, but also lay out the foundations and categories of much subsequent Western thought. Similarly, for each subsequent period, the book combines back ground information, whether on the philosophy of Locke, the history of the French Revolution, the political theories of Marx and Engels, or Freud's views on civilization withy coverage of the major figures and texts of literary-critical thought.

About the Author
M.A.R. Habib is Associate Professor of English at Rutgers University. He received his D.Phil. in English from Oxford University, and is the author of five books, including Modern Literary Criticism and Theory: A History (Blackwell, 2007).

Very useful anthology.

If you are interested in literary theories, this is the book to start with. Presented in a very clear and chronological manner, this book gives a comprehensive view of the development of literary theory and of different schools of thought from Antiquity to modern times. It provides the reader with a solid understanding of how Western thought was shaped throughout the centuries. It fails to fully acknolwledge non-western contributors (a small passage about Ibn Rushd is found but not more), that's why I gave it a 3 star. Still, a very useful tool!
