About the Author
Georgi Gospodinov was born in 1968 and is one of the most translated contemporary Bulgarian writers. His first novel, Natural Novel was published by Dalkey Archive Press in 2005 and was praised by the New Yorker, New York Times, and several other prestigious review outlets. A collection of his short stories, And Other Stories was published by Northwestern University Press. The Physics of Sorrow is his second novel.

Angela Rodel earned an M.A. in linguistics from UCLA and received a Fulbright Fellowship to study and learn Bulgarian. In 2010 she won a PEN Translation Fund Grant for Georgi Tenev's short story collection. She is one of the most prolific translators of Bulgarian literature working today and received an NEA Fellowship for her translation of Gospodinov's The Physics of Sorrow.

Brilliant Literary Fiction

In The Physics of Sorrow, the story of the narrator, Georgi, and his family are told through the lens of the ancient Greek myth of the Minotaur, the half-man, half-bull creature that inhabits the dark tunnels of a labyrinth. The story itself feels like a labyrinthine journey which the author leads us through; we feel like we are groping around in the dark, never sure to which style of writing the author will take us next. Sometimes we encounter a story about the narrator’s grandfather, at other times we are launched into a tale about the narrator himself. Short stories, anecdotes, memories, pictures and even lists are presented as part of the narrative.

Gospodinov uses the story of the Minotaur from Greek mythology to highlight three themes in his book: abandonment, isolation and misunderstanding. Jorge Luis Borges, in his short story “The House of Asterion,” provides us with the Minotaur’s perspective of his dwelling and his pathetic hope of eventual redemption. The Physics of Sorrow expounds on Borges’ characterization of the Minotaur as a creature who is worthy of sympathy and whose half-human, half-bull form are certainly not his fault. At some point in his young life Asterion, the Minotaur, must have been abandoned by his mother and placed in this dark, isolated and lonely labyrinth.

Georgi grows up in Socialist Bulgaria, which itself is an isolated and lonely place. The author points out that before 1989, 80% of Bulgarians had not left their native country. Georgi’s parents have good jobs, but due to the strict controls by the government on housing, his family lives in a cramped basement apartment, their own type of labyrinth. Georgi tells us that he is afflicted with the “Minotaur Syndrome.” Left alone from the age of six in this basement apartment he must fend for and amuse himself until the adults come home at the end of a long day.

Abandonment and isolation are situations which Georgi’s grandfather struggles with first in the story. At the age of three he is almost left behind by his mother at a mill and not until they are half-way home does one of his seven sisters realizes that he is missing. I held my breath at the vivid description of the toddler’s abandonment and thought “hurry up” as his sister raced back to gather the distraught and afraid little boy. The grandfather, who fights in World War II, also has one of the toughest choices to make in the novel: which of his two sons should be abandon because he cannot live with and raise both of them.

Georgi, the narrator, has an issue with truly getting close to a woman and shortly after his daughter is born he falls into a deep melancholy. At his doctor’s advice he travels and Europe itself becomes his labyrinth where he traverses from city to city and hotel to hotel trying to shake off his extreme gloominess. He abandons his family to try and save his sanity but he ends up isolating himself from the world even further. Georgi moves back into his boyhood home in the basement and now, living in this dark labyrinth all alone, the minotaurizing of himself has become complete. At the end of the novel he tries to use the language of quantum physics to describe, sort out and even deal with his sorrow.

The greatest lesson we can take from The Physics of Sorrow is one of empathy and compassion. At one point in the book the Minotaur is put on trial and given his day in court to defend himself against the charge of being a violent monster. He is half-man and half-human and therefore never able to fully fit into to any society, man or animal. This book shed a whole new perspective for me on the story of the Minotaur and the country of Bulgaria which, to be quiet honest, I have never really given a second thought.

Although there were some very brilliant passages, I could not get into the book ...

A previous reviewer said this book is not for everyone. It is not for me. It is billed as a novel, but it is more of an imaginative memoir. The author tells stories of his family, revisits the idea of the labyrinth: from the one that contained the Minotaur to the one in our ears and everywhere in between. Although there were some very brilliant passages, I could not get into the book and stopped reading when I could not read one more word. It was too rambling and not at all a novel. There was no sense of "story."

Unique, Demanding, and Remarkable

This book is most definitely not for everyone. It demands a serious investment by the reader, who must focus on the content, structure, and intent of the novel with a devotion rarely needed in works of fiction. In my opinion, "The Physics of Sorrow" is well worth the effort. Gospodinov uses his family's experiences and the tale of the minotaur to explore human existence, the meaning of life, and the nature of sorrow. The book travels backward and forward through time and changes viewpoints, often without warning. However, this very structure forces the reader out of his/her comfortable worldview, and succeeds in building a world in which the reader is compelled to confront what it means to be a human living (and dying) in the world we thought we knew. It is a remarkable work.

Good interaction of ideas. Don't quit on the book.

I would commend this book to those who want to examine the options about America's Christian religious heritage. Here's why:

1. The four contributors are all respectful of the impact of Christianity on the country. There is no hostility toward the idea of a Christian heritage as I've seen at times.

2. One name that will come up often in this discussion, whether you read this book or not, is David Barton. He contributes the chapter on America as Distinctly Christian. His view is interacted with and critiqued by other historical scholars who see both strengths and weaknesses in his methods. This chapter is worth the book because his voice is one of the loudest on this subject. He makes his case clearly here, and people who are not his enemies offer critique of it.

3. The book does not shy away from a contribution that asserts no clear Christian intention in the founding of the country. One contributor, Jonathan Sassi, puts forth evidence that the Founders, while they may have been Christians themselves, purposely insulated the government from even their own beliefs.

4. The interplay between ideas is demonstrated. The rebuttals are not simply restatements of opposition, but actually engaging with the ideas presented.

5. The authors have generally dialed down presenting agenda and focused on the history.

In all, unless you are already completely staked out on one view, you'll find this volume helpful.

About the Author
Wayne M. Becker teaches cell biology at the University of Wisconsin, Madison. His interest in textbook writing grew out of notes, outlines, and problem sets that he assembled for his students, culminating in Energy and the Living Cell, a paperback text on bioenergetics published in 1977, and The World of the Cell, the first edition of which appeared in 1986. He earned all his degrees at the University of Wisconsin, Madison. All three degrees are in biochemistry, an orientation that is readily discernible in his textbooks. His research interests have been in plant molecular biology, focused specifically on the regulation of the expression of genes that encode enzymes of the photorespiratory pathway. His interests in teaching, learning, and research have taken him on sabbatical leaves at Harvard University, Edinburgh University, the University of Indonesia, the University of Puerto Rico, Canterbury University in Christchurch, New Zealand, and the Chinese University of Hong Kong. His honors include a Guggenheim Fellowship, a Chancellor's Award for Distinguished Teaching, and a Visiting Scholar Award from the Royal Society of London. Lewis J. Kleinsmith is a Professor of Molecular, Cellular, and Developmental biology at the University of Michigan, where he has served on the faculty since receiving his Ph.D. from Rockefeller University in 1968. His teaching experiences have involved courses in introductory biology, cell biology, and cancer biology, and his research interests have included studies of growth control in cancer cells, the role of protein phosphorylation in eukaryotic gene regulation, and the control of gene expression during development. Among his numerous publications, he isthe author of Principles of Cell and Molecular Biology, first published in 1988, and several award-winning educational software programs. His honors include a Guggenheim Fellowship, the Henry Russell Award, a Michigan Distinguished Service Award, citations for outstanding teaching from the Michigan Students Association, a Thurnau Professorship, an NIH Plain Language Award, and a Best Curriculum Innovation Award from the EDUCOM Higher Education Software Awards Competition. Jeff Hardin received his Ph.D. in biophysics from the University of California, Berkeley, and pursued post-doctoral work at Duke University. In 1991 he joined the faculty of the Zoology Department at the University of Wisconsin, Madison, where he is currently an associate professor. His research interests center on how the cells move and change the shape of the embryo. Dr. Hardin's teaching is enhanced by his extensive use of video-microscopy and his Web-based teaching materials, which are used on many campuses in the United States and other countries. As part of his interest in teaching biology, Dr. Hardin has been involved in several teaching initiatives, including being a founding member of the University of Wisconsin system-wide instructional technology initiative known as BioWeb. He is currently faculty director of the Biocore Curriculum, a four-semester honors biology sequence for undergraduates. His teaching awards include a Lily Teaching Fellowship and a National Science Foundation Young Investigator Award. Gregory Paul Bertoni, the newest member of the author team, has been active in teaching and research for over 20 years. He earned a Ph.D. in Cellular and Molecular Biology from the University ofWisconsin-Madison, where his teaching experiences included introductory and graduate-level biochemistry, sophomore cell biology, and plant physiology. He also helped to develop a new course entitled "Ways of Knowing" designed to introduce entering freshmen to the learning process itself. His published research includes studies in bacterial pathogenesis, plant-microbe interactions, and plant gene expression. He is currently teaching biology and medical microbiology at Columbus State Community College in Columbus, Ohio, where he has just been nominated for a Distinguished Teaching Award. In addition, Dr. Bertoni is a freelance scientific writer who has contributed to text- and web-based projects in biology, physics, and microbiology. He is also a science editor for The Plant Cell, a leading research journal in plant biology and molecular biology.

It does what it says it does

Every chapter in the main book has 10 - 20 exercises. This book provides the answers to these exercises. I am not sure if it is worth the $50 just to double check your answers when this can be done by just going back over the material in the textbook. The authors could have provided this material on their website, but I'd hate to undermine capitalism.

Very thin solution manual

Its alright, it gives the solutions like it suppose to. However it only gives the solutions meaning its very thin, so I have to carry both books if I want to use this one to study. I have seen better solutions manuals that will state the question and the answer making it more confident to study.

With how thin this book, its very easy to leave at home if your forgetful or tear up in your bag. However you will need this with your text book so that you can study. Some of my test questions come straight out of the homework so don't hesitate to buy this.

Gripping Forensic Tale

This is the true story about a murder back in 1915, and the ensuing tale of corruption, injustice, and forensic sleuthing that revolutionized the American courtroom. Charles Stielow was born in Germany and moved with his parents to the US and settled in New York. But he had a very low IQ, never learned to read and write, and even his speech was heavily accented. He worked menial jobs as a farmhand. He had the misfortune of being in the wrong place at the wrong time, and ended up being arrested and charged with the murder of the wealthy landowner on whose farm he was working at the time. Stielow was found guilty of the murder and sent to Death Row. This gripping story, expertly presented by Colin Evans, tells of the various aspects of the case, from witness statements, forced confessions, courtroom lies, seemingly endless legal appeals, and finally --- miraculously --- justice.

One very intriguing aspect to this relatively obscure case was how it revolutionized the use of forensic evidence in courtrooms, not only in the US, but worldwide. Here is one passage from the book that explains:

"Those four gunshots fired on a snowy night in Western New York changed forever the face of forensic science and gave law enforcement agencies around the globe access to a system of accurate firearms analysis. That in itself is a fine achievement, but the greater and more lasting legacy of the Stielow case goes deeper than mere scientific accomplishment, right to the core of what it means to be human."

And that last part is what makes this books so moving and memorable. Even though Stielow was not a wealthy man, nor one who fully understood his predicament, he had a team of lawyers and activists fully in his corner, as well as the moral support of his fellow prisoners and even his jailers. This true crime tale reads at times like a modern thriller thanks to Evans' taut narrative and use of dialogue, taken apparently from old newspaper accounts of the trial. This is a book that should be of interest to history buffs and anyone fascinated by forensic science, as well as anyone looking for a good read.

This book's story took place long ago in the town that I live in.....besides being local it really had national effects on police techniques and legal precidents that survive to today. great story and the condition of it was very good.

This is more than a murder mystery and sending an innocent man to prison in New York decades ago. It captures the human drama of participants in law enforcement & politics who do their jobs in such a disgraceful manner that reminds the reader that human nature remains the same today. Good people to the rescue combat the bad people by promoting science in crime investigation and enough good people with common sense who defeat the bad people. Enough said. It is a good read.
